I have been loading Hornady XTP HP 124gr using Unique at 5gr and COL of 1.10 My question is, and I know I should work up to this load. Can I load a 124 gr XTP HP with the same load data as a Speer GDHP 124gr of up to 5.8grs of Unique and a col of 1.12 without any problems. I mean it's the same bullet weight, so I don't see why I couldn't
Thanks for any imput |

Make that OAL longer. WWB is (or was) at the max magaxine length for MOST 9mm handguns: 1.160"
Why longer? -lower pressure for same velocity -lower pressure = less stress on brass - """ less stress on gun -far larger safety margin in the case of a set back. BUT - there IS one thing you are required to check: make 1 dummy round at the longer length & make sure that it does NOT touch your pistol's rifling. |
| Hornady's 7th has a recommended overall length for the 9MM 124 XTP HP at 1.060" with a max charge of Unique at 5.0 grains with WSP primers. The hollow point bullets have a shorter oal than round nose ones. I've loaded the Speer Gold Dot 124 HP with Unique, CCI 500 primers, Win cases at 5.4 grains and get approx. 1135 fps in a Glock 19 pistol. My overall length for the 124GD was 1.120-1.125" which is Speer's recommendation for their bullet. The Hornady is a jacketed bullet while the Gold Dot is plated. Don't know how they'd compare for pressure. You'd need to be careful and work up. |

Loading longer doesn't always mean the cartridge will continue to feed properly. You also have to consider whether or not you have enough bearing surface between the case and the projectile to provide sufficient neck tension.
I am not familiar with loading either of these two projectiles, so I can't comment specifically. I do know that, while 9mm WWB is loaded to 1.160", it's projectile has a different profile that the two projectiles the OP mention. I think you will find your desired OAL (in terms of performance and reliability) is going to be close to what the manuals call for. jonblack |
