I posted this in the M1A Section/Precision Rifle as well:
I have a question an I am sure I will get a multitude of answers and thats what I am looking for so here goes, how often do you use a copper solvent on your barrel ? my regiment is to shoot a few hundred then take her home and pull some soaked patches of Butch's Bore Shine down the tube then follow with some Hoppes 9 then some lube some guys at the Range said I am way over doing it they advise about 3-4 soaked patches of Hoppes 9 then some oil, what say the group ?

I clean with Butch's, partly because the ammonia content is high enough to stay on top of the copper build up.  Follow up with Sweet's every few hundred rounds if there's a suspicion the copper is building.  I chase both with Hoppe's.

I also use Butch's when I clean, chased with Break Free, then a little Kroil. I also have some Sweet's 7.62 that will get used on occasion.
It's been about 250 rounds since the last field day on the .308. In the next 50 rounds, the groups will open up a little...then It'll be time to clean again.

Most people say to clean copper when the accuracy begins to drop off.  When I shoot my M1a and garands, I really don't clean the barrel much because you have to be so careful of damaging the crown when cleaning.  I will normally just get the crap out of the barrel with mpro-7 (or whatever carbon solvent you choose) and then lightly oil a patch for corrosion resistance.  I will maybe use KG-12 (best copper solvent IMO) once a year or every several 1000 rds.

In my ar's where a typical shooting day (or two) is 200-500 rds, I will use the KG-12 every other cleaning but I also use a bore guide and feel that there is less chance of damaging your barrel.

This is just the way I do it.
