Seems like a good story for today. Had some 9mm with primer issues due to poor removal of the crimp.
Grabbed the kinetic pulled and removed 3 of the plated projectiles.
Chucked up the next one and smacked it.
What the-damn primer went off.
Didn't set the Titegroup off.
Done pulling bullets with primer issue with a kinetic....
The primers were partially collapsed by my stubbornness.
The whack just finished them off

Carry on.

damn, that could've been bad.  I'm with ya, collet style for anything suspect.

I'll guess the primers were seated too hard, so the anvil was preloaded against the priming compound making the primer more sensitive to the impact.

Wonder why it didn't set the powder off?

Perhaps since it wasnt seated all the way and couldnt jump thru the flash hole.

My best guess

Glad you weren't hurt. Was you bullet puller damaged?

Hope you are on the right track on the primer crimp removal issue.

Don't be afraid to ask if you need help.

Is it just me, or does the fact the powder didn't go off not make sense?

Anvil could have come loose and a leg blocked the flash hole. Does seem odd though.

Powder's failure to ignite = Miracle ....... question answered - they still happen; we just fail to recognize them for what they are.

Miracle? Maybe, I certainly believe. Had the powder ignited, there would have been some excitement, for sure. But the round was not contained and the case walls would have split. He certainly could have been injured and the plastic puller would have been damaged, but it wouldn't have been like taking your Glock 19 and putting your barrel against the concrete and discharging it. I would estimate a good portion of the powder would have been blown away without burning, the projectile would likely have been contained by the nose of the puller, and the case might have blown backwards out of the collet and the rear of the kinetic puller. He most certainly could have had injury, likely from plastic or brass shrapnel. Those kinetic pullers have pretty thick plastic, especially in the nose, which is heavily reinforced.

Here is something to think about. One in ten million, I know, but having one detonate in a seating die would be much worse. Not all of us use kinetic pullers, but I say all of use seating dies.

Most likely, unless....  The O.P. didn't mention whether he was using the tool's original shell holding parts or whether he was using a reloading press shell holder as a replacement like more than a few people try.

If he was using such a shell holder, the possibility exists, for any high primer, mangled or not, to slide on the shell holder and present the high primer to the edge of the center hole of the holder, where that edge strikes the primer on the first whack.  It has happened more than a few times, such that RCBS for one, has warned not to use press shell holders in their kinetics.

That's why, in my homemade kinetic, I went to the trouble to make epoxy keepers to prevent sliding.

See pictures below.

Could be used in a commercial kinetic too if a persons insists on using a  reloading press shell holder.
More details on making such a keeper is here.
Takes a tube of epoxy putty, some Dymo tape, 3 minutes to form, 30 minutes to dry. (lt. coat of spraylube on the S.H. prevents sticking.)

Glad you are O.K.!!!
