What is your preference and what have you had positive experience with?

I'm sorting brass and sticking some aside to make a SHTF 9mm 124grn FMJ load. I have a bucket of once fired Federal Champion, PPU, MFS, and Winchester brass. The other stuff is mostly RP, GFL, CBC, *I*, Blazer, and fiocchi brass. I'm going to be using that stuff for my target/practice loads. I just saved what I thought to be "the good stuff" (Win, ppu, MFS, Fed champion for the shtf load). I put anything I thought was a previous reload into the target/practice brass bucket.

Is remington, "GFL", "CBC", "*I*", Blazer, and Speer brass any good? What about Winchester, MFS, PPU, and Federal Champion?

I would pass on the MFS, I think it's Russian but am not sure. Speer brass is fine, provided it isn't the aluminun Blazer. Brass Blazer is good to go. Winchester is amoung the very best and Remington will work well too.

The only brass I would really warn you off of is AMERC. It really isn't IMO safe for the first firing based on what I've seen and heard. Do not reload it under any circumstance.

You'll never run into quality issues when using American made brand name brass. Foreign sources can be dicey, unless it's IMI or NATO member generated. Those are usually good.

Others will report their experiences, I believe there is a sticky somewhere on this topic.

MFS is Hungarian made ammo. Shoots fine and very nice, clean and shiny brass. Reloadable, I believe, I have a fair bit of it.

Don't load much handgun ammo anymore. But when I did, I prefered nickel plated brass. Lasts a long time. Still have a bunch loaded up. Any quality rifle brass works for me. And I like to load them hot.

anything free from the range that can pass inspection in each reloading step.

Lapua for my Grendel and .260

Winchester for my .223 and .308

Winchester, R-P, etc. for my .45 and 9mm. I'm not real picky about handgun brass.

Pretty much anything but AMERC, for me.

I am partial to S&B brass.  Very strong, lasts many loadings.  I always smile when I'm sorting brass and see the red primer sealant.

Frankly, I've never seen the need to sort my 9mm brass by headstamp.

If you're looking to only load the best of the best and don't mind wasting your time sorting, stick with only Win headstamps if it makes you feel better.

Have fun.

Added important info-

ALL cases MUST be inspected prior to use.  But the only headstamp that guaranteed should be dumped is AMERC.  I made some dummies out of the better ones that I'd culled, but I wouldn't trust them to hold the bullets if I hadn't epoxied them in.

This is exactly how I feel

With the exception of americ, all 9mm brass is fine, some more than others.

My favorites are Win, FC, and Rem in that order. Nothing wrong with Speer, I, CBC, GFL, and Fioocchi either.

The others you mentioned, I haven't used.

Winchester is preferred, I have to sort out the federal stuff because for some reason I get completly different OAL with that, even though its the brass is the same length, so I have to use a different bullet seating setting to get my HP reloads using federal brass to chamber.

I've got a bunch of S&B and MFS and they work perfectly fine. I'm saving the WIN brass for SHTF because i have the most of that, all teh other stuff gets mixed together once loaded for blasting ammo.

I'm guessing sorting brass by maker is necessary too.

Definitely, I didn't at first and half of my HP reloads were too long to chamber, as the projectile was touching the grooves causing it not to chamber.

For SHTF, set aside some good loaded ammo, not just the brass.  Set aside a bunch of Winchester brass, unfired.

That's my goal right now. I need to get my Dillon.  I'm looking at a 124grn 9mm fmj as my shtf load for the pistols, I just need to test it out with various mfg brass tp make sure, then start on bottleneck cases after I master straight wall.
