That information would sell a lot of reloaders. Once you show people the numbers, they get it. You'd think it would. Then again you'll find those that argue with and take cost calculator to new heights by adding costs of reloading equipment. Have seen several threads in ammunition forum where this has been discussed in great depth. For most of us the cost of equipment is the cost of our hobby. For most the cost of equipment can be recouped in a few months to a few years depending on volume shot and how deep into tools or what color equipment you buy. Bottom line. Reloading isn't for everyone and given the back order situations at some " mail order " outfits. It's fine by me if some gave reloading up. Besides, if every shooter reloaded where would our free brass come from ? |

Cool. I built a spreadsheet that does very similar stuff. Sometimes, even when you tell them you can save 60-70 cents per round, they still don't get it. My brother-in-law came by and saw me in the process of swaging 4K of LC brass. I explained how much I was going to save and he said ".. there's thousands of them, it's like paying yourself $3/hr - heh heh." He obviously didn't do the math, because even if I only load up 4 per minute due to taking my sweet time & handling them twice more because of the swaging & I deprime seperate from sizing, that still puts me at ~250 per hour with a savings of 60 cents per. That means I'm paying myself $150 an hour in savings compared to the quality ammo I'd have to pay $1/round for. So in 3K rounds (or 12 hours) I will have paid for all the equipment, tools & supplies I purchased last december. Then I can start putting those savings toward new guns, or more likely, bathroom renovations that the wife wants. |

Besides, if every shooter reloaded where would our free brass come from ? Sure - but two things: reloading equipment is a "sunk cost." The CPR on rounds 1-1,000 are not the same as rounds 1,001 - 2,000 even if you factor in the cost. Second - I spent maybe 2 hours with breaks, going slowly as I am 100% new and still managed to produce 500+ rounds of JHP .40 S&W. I saw 500 rounds FMJ for $215 before shipping - so I got better ammo, way cheaper. I figure it was worth $250 easy, maybe component cost was $80 - so I made (or actually saved) about $85 an hour loading ammo. That is more than I make at my day job, so I'm sold. Once I make $1,500 - $2,000 worth of ammo - the reloading equipment is paid for IMO. Hell - you don't count the wear on a BCG when you shoot . . . it's called L-I-V-I-N-G the way you want. ETA: with three 6.8 rifles, I almost have to reload to get what I want when I want it cheaper than I can get it elsewhere. |

gotta factor in time... I loaded 500 rounds of .45, total material cost of $7.36 / 50 rounds, but I put in at least 12 hours to do all the case prep and loading (I have a single stage RCBS press) gotta factor in time...... ?? the word masturbation comes to mind when someone says this when reloading. Time is irrelevant to reloading when using a single stage press. It's irrelevant to most regardless of press. If it was relevant you'd buy factory ammo or you'd be loading on a 1050. Time ? Guys don't think of time when masturbating.... much like puling the press handle. You reload because it's something fun to do with your spare time. |

If you have the free time, it's free. If you are loading instead of working at your job, then fine. If someone says you could be doing something else with your time.. What exactly? Shopping, going out to eat, etc then you are wasting money that could have been spent loading ammo. |

Time wouldn't be factored in for us who are already into reloading, but using only the component costs to sell shooters on reloading might be a little misleading. They may like the savings in cost, but after looking at the time investment, they may think it isn't worth it... |
