I just picked up some 62gr FMJs at a good price and am looking for load data. I cant seem to find any... Anyone have good data for loading these with Varget or IMR 4350 / 4895? These do not have the steel / tungsten core as the mil spec. do, but as advertised are all lead but the same dimensionally. HELP!!! Thanks all! |

Nobody will publish a duplication load because M855 NATO spec ammo is over SAAMI pressure limits. You can get close though.
Speer markets a 62 grain FMJ and their load data is known to run on the hot side. they show a maximum load of 25.0 grains of RE-15 which usually runs neck and neck with Varget for charge weights. You will get a full case of Varget at 25.0 grains, filled to the bottom of the case neck. Their fastest load was with AA2520 and 26.5 grains. It was a little over 3000 fps. You try 24.5 grains of IMR-4895 which is Speer's maximum load with that powder. IMR-4350 is too slow and bulky for use in .223. The charges I listed are maximums according to Speer. Work up to them from below. BTW "Beer is the proof that God loves us and wants us happy" were the first words out of Ben Franklin's mouth after coming to from flying his kite in a thunderstorm. |

So are your bullets steel core SS-109's or Speer 62 gr FMJBT's?
When I first started loading SS-109's I used Speer's starting loads for their 62 gr FMJBT and worked up. Worked fine for me. This data is in all Speer manuals from #12 to present. Up in "useful threads", my SS-109 loads are in one of my posts. |
