| Has anyone got any suggestions for a starting load for 210gr Speer GDHP? I"m trying out different weight bullets in my smith and have been useing IMR 4227,Blue Dot and Universal none of the loads I have worked up so far shoot Lil Gun worth a crap. Useing CCI 300 primers also. Thanks for any help |

2400 shoots better from my Anaconda than Blue dot (I have the old Hercules brand still ) ,But I'm shooting 240 gr. XTP's for hunting. I have loaded 200 gr. speers in my 8" Dan Wesson with blue dot with good success. Try the 2400 seems most 44 mags like it . Short barrels may not though because of the slower burning 2400.
Have you tried Unique ? |

If you are going for full velocity loads, W-296 or H-110 always gave me my best results. 357 or 44 mag. Use a Magnum primer and a firm crimp. I never found a load with Lil Gun that was accurate. Unique is good for 1,000 fps, mid range loads. All the above except I can't comment on Lil Gun. My personal preference is for H110 for full power and Unique for cast loads. You can get more than 1000 fps out of Unique but you will need a good lubed hard bullet and possibly even a gas checked one so you don't get leading. Standard primers and a decent crimp (not as heavy as full power loads) are the way to go with Unique. |

Sorry,no experience with what you want.
Like others I setteled years ago with Unique for the stuff up to 1000fps , then I jump to the full loads of 2400. I am happy with those in my 2 1/2" 629,my 6"629 and my marlin cowboy It has got to where I have not loaded anything but the 240 cast bullets for about 20 years. Years back whenever I got a new caliber I would buy every bullet I could find and every powder listed for it,now I am happy to find a couple of powders that work decent across the board and in this case it was more or less love at first load |

Hey guys thanks for the tips! Just got back from my range where I tested out some more handloads. Getting pretty frusterated.
I"m shooting a Smith 629 Classic w/5 in barrel. Am I wrong to think I should be able to do better than 3 inch groups a 25 yards? I know someone will say I just suck and cant shoot but I dont have any problems shooting 1 1/2 groups with Kimber 45, or any of my glocks in 9mm 40, and 45. Also my XD 45 and XDM 9mm shoot great to. I'm shooting off sandbags and also have my elbows on sandbags to be as steady as I can. Seeing light on both sides of front sight and slow squeeze on trigger. I'm not new to reloading, just new to the 44 mag. Useing Lee dies and the first loads I made left alot of unburned powdwer in chambers and barrel. Called Lee and they said I needed more crimp so I have been useing the factory crimp die and setting it as per directions. Then I will charge up 60 rnds with same load and crimp 10 bullets with 1/2 turn more than standard setting. The next 10 goes to 3/4 turn and then the next 10 to 1 full turn. Then I go shoot and get goofy ass groups. How much am I affecting pressures with the damn crimp die. Can you guys shed any light on this for me ? I'm ready to throw away that Smith and get a Ruger, not that it would help me in my reloading efforts. Sorry to go on like this, but this is like a damn rubix cube! I never had this much time and energy put into loads for 25.06,243,40sw or45! |

I never had this much time and energy put into loads for 25.06,243,40sw or45! Ditch the Lil' Gun and go for 2400 and/or Unique. I haven't used enough H110/296 to formulate an opinion on them, other than H110 likes hotter loads than I really want to use. I have not been impressed with Lil' Gun so far, but I've only used it in heavy cast bullet .357 magnums and .410 shotshells. It seems to be very erratic in the handgun loads, and I never did get an extreme spread of less than about 40 fps(IIRC) with an average ES of about 70 or 80, which is extreme. I had this problem with mild to wild charge weights and various amounts of crimp...as well as a couple different primers(mag and standard, two brands of standard IIRC) and cases. Pressures were all over the map, etc... 2400 will prefer to be closer to the top end of acceptable pressures(and load data). Unique is probably going to be at it's best around the middle to higher end of load data. |

Sounds like a flinching problem to me. |
