This happened in the town I grew up in.  Sounds like it could have been surplus pull down powder.  If you have any pull down, this will give you all the reason to keep an eye on it for signs it is degrading.

I lived just across the river on the Ohio side. There has always been some weird stuff going on there. I knew some of the people killed when the Silver Bridge collapsed between Pt. Pleasant and Kanauga. Plus who could forget about the "Mothman"?

P.S. Thanks for the link.

Not what powder does… When it degrades, it no longer burns.

The investigation, if it is ever published, will find some other source of ignition. After ignited, the powder does just what you expect it to do when that quantity is stored in a bunker.

Most likely, they will find that Mothman was smoking in the bunker

About a year ago there was a thread about surplus powders self igniting. Guy almost lost his garage.

I remember that thread. It was Thunderbird powder IIRC and it had developed the "red dust" . The guy opened it to inspect and realized it was bad. He put it out in his yard and later that day it ignited..

I live in Mason Co. (The opposite end of the county)
I didn't even know those bunkers were there until one blew up!
