Got a leupold AR scope and I am looking for a 223 load that will push a 55gr bullet 3000fps.  Give me your suggestions.

I use H-335.  I'm paranoid I don't give out charge weights on the net.!!!LOL

3000 fps is kinda anemic for a 55 gr bullet.

Load for accuracy then velocity.

The reloading manuals and on line data have many such loads.

Thank God you two posted as I'm  a bit tired of people who are too lazy to buy a manual or check the online sites.

Thanks alot.  I thoght instead of buying six different powders someone would give me a little advise on what works best for them.  I load 335 but my seirra and hornady maunel either doesn't list a 3000fps load or it is a maximum load.  but never mind I'll find it on my own!

ETA:  If you do a lot of digging around on internet archiving sites you may also be able to find the Accurate Powder 223 load data sheets.  They used to be on their site but no longer are published there.  If you use I believe it is called the way back machine you can dig through the archives and find some additional data sheets.  Advanced Google search look for .pdf files and search 223 Remington load data will also yield results.

This subject of loads comes up often and a little reading of posts can answer a lot of questions.

Example of a currently running thread.

I don't mean to be dogging a new guy, but you really should read the FAQ's, Tutorials, Links (find the on line data here), "Useful Threads", and the Reloading Data base, all located at the top of the page.

If you want loading data for a certain bullet in 223 and don't have the manual just ask, but please do some research first.

Your question was kinda vague, and it didn't seem that you had read any reloading manuals.

Anyway, welcome to Arfcom.

Look around and get a feel for the site, we are willing to help those who put a little effort into learning the reloading process.

The main thing is we want you to be safe while you learn.

Again, not trying to be a smart ass, just being honest.

Good luck.

edit for spelling.

Just a word of advice.  Asking for particular loads on a reloading forum always ends up with people giving the same smartass responses:  read a loading book or figure it out yourself.

It's always blown my mind that hardly anyone will either just list their damn load and answer the question or at least point them in the right direction.  Yes looking up loads is helpful, but if someone has already paved the path with experience, why not allow others to tap into that?  That's why it's considered the reloading community...not the reloading elitist club.

There is no best powder, and what you asked for can be met by at least 7 or 8 without approaching a maximum load.  There's a huge reloading database tacked at the top of the forum, too.

When the question is asked too broadly, how can it be answered?  That is the most usual problem, we have to tease information out of the person that posed a question to find out what he really needs to know.

Everyone get back on track.  Either help, or don't post.  That includes the thread originator.

The problem with the original question and the follow up, is that at least a half dozen different gunpowders will be recommended, which puts porkpopper in no better position than when he started.  Plus, due to the nature of reloading, there's no way to know without experimenting a little and shooting your gun.

Your barrel length will make a big difference.

I'm willing to give you a little direction:

First, I like W748 alot for 55 grain bullets, and I use a 55 grain VMax as my #1 prairie dog load.  I use LC brass and CCI 41 primers.  The charge weight will depend upon your experience, and the chamber of the rifle you are shooting.   For example, my Pdog rifle is a match style .223 chamber, and "tight bore,"  that does not handle 5.56 pressures, so getting to 3000 FPS is not problem, but if I were looking at a certain velocity, then trying to load up to that, I might either ignore a slower, much more accurate load, or worse, start too hot and have to start up the ladder all over again.

I also like Reloder 7 and H322 for these bullet weights, but that depends upon which brand and style bullet (tangent, secant ogive, hollow point, soft point) I happen to have found is best with each.

Many others will say H335, 2230 or 2015.  This is where you will have to find which one you like the best.  I love H335 for speed but I just don't personally get quite as accurate a load with it as I do with W748.  YMMV, for sure, so start with these and check back to tell us your results.

Hope this helps

26 grains of H335, 55g FMJ milsurp. bullets and LC brass gets me 3000 f/s out of a 16 inch chrome lined barrel. To get the same velocity from a 20 in barrel I would drop the powder charge 1-2 grains.

H335 55 gr.
Max published load by Hodgdon 25.3 gr

The loads I deleted are way too hot to post in this forum.  AeroE
