Well....  it wasn't too long ago I read that there are two kinds of reloaders - those that have had a squib and those that are gonna have one.  Got that out of the way tonight.

Worked up a new load of 9mm last night - 5 of each, .1 grain apart.  Went to the range tonight to test them out.  Pulled the trigger - couldn't decipher right away whether "nothin" happened or if I heard a pop...  kept it pointed downrange for a few moments - nothing.  Dropped the mag, locked back the slide and out came a sooty piece of brass.  Looks like the primer fired and that was it (no unburnt powder, just a bullet about 3/4 inch into the barrel).  Was able to knock it out when I got home using an old cleaning rod.

Not sure what happened - I was only loading 5 at a time and I "thought" everything was triple checked (obviously not).  Didn't think I got distracted and thought I had a good system down pat (obviously not).  The good news is that it wasn't double charged (which would have been obvious as it would have overflowed the case).  I've got two batches of my workup left to fire...  hopeful that I didn't do the same thing twice.  I contemplated pulling them apart to check them, but since I'm sure I couldn't have overfilled them without noticing, I'm going to continue my testing of the two unfired batches.

Lesson learned!  Glad I read about it here and that I was paying attention when it happened.  Rangemaster told me a story of a guy that was out at the range a few days ago that almost sent a second round down the tube after a squib (the rangemaster was paying attention and realized what was happening.

well at least now you got it out of the way, good thing you weren't trying to be the tough guy double tapping that paper to it's instant death

Factory ammo is just as susceptible to squib loads and double charges- I've got a good hunch a lot of kBooms are the result of non reloaders not paying attention/knowing about bad loads.

Your squib was a case without powder.

Be sure to check powder charges by looking down the cases in the loading block before seating bullets.

Look for no powder, or a double charge.

Glad your lesson caused no harm to you or your pistol.
