| I am going to load up my first live rounds today and have a ? The load data I have calls for a max of 42.723 grains of Reloader 7 but to start I know I want to back it down a bit so as a rule in general how much do you all back a load down for the first loading? This is for a 458 SOCOM BTW. |

I usually download about 20% if it still cycles the action. It is easier on me, my ears and my rifle. As long as the action cuycles, I note where it is and mark it as GTG since I am generally a target shooter and not a hunter.
Also, I notice, are my substantial download I get less stretch, therefore less trim, therefore more brass life. At $.80 each, that is a good thing for the 458. Dan PS: Go with the 500 Grain, you can stay subsonci and use a lot less RL7. Dan |

10% is a good start, unless you see a warning in the load data against that much reduction.
Even with data that lists a minimum, often there is no need to reduce start charges that far. However, it's a good place to start if the goal is light loads for low recoil or bullet speed. |

Thanks for the replys. I actually had data from Marty that listed 42.0 grains of RL7 as his pet load for that bullet so I loaded up 5 rounds at that load. I did 2 rounds that all I had was max of 34.0828 grains so I cut it back to 31 grains for it's first go. I do have a chrony so I will try and see how they do in the next couple days |
