I have what I believe to be a 223 round with the head stamp:
RA 60 with red sealer on the primer which also crimped. No NATO cross on it. I am assuming it is Remington Arms made in 1960 I am 100% sure its not a 2006 as it was buried in a drawer in my grandfathers garage and he has been gone since 2004. I will break out the calipers when I get home and get some measurements off of it and some pics as well. |

Thats what I though it was. I just thought 1964 was a little early for the 223 but upon further research 223 existed as early as 1957. but 64 was the first year for this head stamp. |

From Wiki: "With the U.S. military adoption of the ArmaLite AR-15 as the M16 rifle in 1963, the .223 Remington was standardized as the 5.56x45mm. However, the .223 Remington was not introduced as a commercial sporting cartridge until 1964." Stoner and Armalite were toying with smaller calibers as far back as the late 50s, but there were many different .222 type cases being tested, so it doesn't seem like a '1960' headstamp would be correct.
