Is there specific load data for working up loads with cast bullets?

Wanting to find a load for my Win. 94 .30-.30 lever action, using Win.748 and OregonTrails 170grTrueShot lead bullet(with gas check).  Had started a thread the other day and some of the responses got me questioning  what little knowledge i have in handloading. So before i go any farther please educate me.  Doing searches on the web one site stated to start at 29.0gr.  My Hornady manual for Win748 and 170gr FP bullet gives MIn 31.4 and Max. 36.5 grains.

Is there that much difference between a lead bullet(w/gas check) and a jacketed bullet?

came across this site:
http://www.gmdr.com/lever/lowveldata.htm

noticed they were using pistol powders.  Was just curious if this was more for "cowboy" shooting/plinking? or if there was another reason?  With the low velocities i wouldn't think it would be for hunting.

The data will be very different between cast and jacketed.  The Lyman manual is a good resource if you shoot lead.  Lyman manual starts #311291 170 gr gas checked bullet at 23.8 grains of 748.   I shoot the #311041 173 gr with a light load of IMR 4198 at 1700 fps and have gotten very good groups.  Lyman notes the lighter loads being possibly more accurate.

It is the suggested starting load.

Suggested starting, 23.8 gr. 1604 fps 16,900 CUP
Max load  37.3gr.   2355fps  35100 CUP

From the Lyman Reloading Handbook (49th)

170  Lyman Gas Check #311291 Winchester W-748 23.8gr 1604fps
Remarks: start load; OAL: 2.521"; 16,900 cup; CCI 200 primer

170 Lyman Gas Check #311291 Winchester W-748 37.3gr 2355fps
Remarks: max load; compressed load; OAL: 2.521"; 35,100 cup; CCI 200 primer

These are gas checked cast bullets - and as always verify your data.

I glanced at the data there and IMO, any of those loads would take deer at 50 yards. Better choices for a hunting load certainly exist, but those would definitely be fun for plinking.
