Looking at taking the human factor out of testing new reloads that I am working up.

Do any of you guys / gals have any info, or blue-prints on a quality mechanical rests?

Thinking this would be a great way to truely see how a load or work up to a load performs.

Thanks!

ziarifleman posted photos of a rest he built with hand tools.

There are all sorts of rests on the internet to check out for ideas.  If you can fabricate one, you don't need plans.  A good set of front and rear bags will get you most of what you're going to achieve with a $250 Hart with a Hoehn windage top.

Sinclair has very good photos of their rests on their web site.  Protector sells excellent bags.

+ 1 on the Protektor bags. I have tried about every brand available and the Protektor bags are by far the best built ones you can get.

About 6 years ago when i was working in a tool shop, I made a custom rest out of a benchmaster shooting rest for my neighbor who was shooting in bench rest matches. i used the frame and made a fine adjustable front and rear rest that worked off of a lead screw i machined....It was made out of 304 stainless lead screws, aluminum, and delrin...... The setup was pretty sweet but i don't have any reference pics unfortunately

I use a Caldwell DFT Lead Sled for testing loads, it;s hard to tell if a load is 1 MOA or better without something eliminating all the variables but the ammo it's self( wind, temp, BP, altitude, and stuff like that just cant be controlled).

i use a rest from cabelas. it's heavy as hell by itself; no bags to carry. it's called cabela's premier rifle rest.
it's for pistol, rifle and cleaning(has a clamp for buttstock)
best part is it's on sale=$100, from $150!

What rifle are you wanting to test (AR or bolt)?

In addition to the rest itself, make sure you've got a good sold bench under you, get some good high magnification optics, and a 3" wide forearm adapter (here), and possible an anti-tilt device to prevent canting
