can't find any data in my books on the Hornady 75gn bthp so I'm looking at a loading for 75 gn A-max. I was thinking of loading with 24.5 grains of winchester 748 but I'm not sure if the pressure will be too high or not (shooting out of one of my AR's). Anyone have any advice/suggestions?

I have been using between 21.5 and 22 grains of H322. It has been working ok.

The hornady loading manual page scan that I have shows the 75 grain max load of win 748 to be 24.0 grains.
The page is a couple years old so it may be different now.

This is the current max load for this bullet according to the Hornady 7th edition.

They don't list data with the 75 grain and WW748.   I think they do that sometimes because they want to persuade people to use Hodgdon powder when they can.

Your suggested load is the max load listed for a 69 grainer, so you probably want to start with less.

The starting load is 20.2gr's and a max load of 24.0gr's for the 75gr BTHP with a COL of 2.250" using Win 748. This is from Hornady 7th manual.

My normal short range highpower load is 25.0 of Win748 under a Hornady 75 BTHP...no excessive pressure signs. YMMV

WInchester powder is Hodgdon powder. I think Win, IMR and Hodgdon are all marketed by Hodgdon now.

Heavy weight .224 bullets usually prefer stick powders, the only exception I'm aware of is AA-2520 which some have reported excellent velocity and accuracy.

Hornady's latest manual does show 24.0 grains even as a maximum load. Velocity is listed at 2700 fps from their 20" barrel if you have a chronograph.

My picks for powder, based on what I've tried and others are using in NRA highpower tournaments is;

Reloder-15 - 24.0 grains max.

Varget - 23.5 grains max.

VihtaVuori NN-140 - 23.5 grains max.

VihtaVuori N-540 23.7 grains max.

H-4895 - 23.0 grains max.

AA-2520 - 22.5 grains max.

Whatever you do don't start at these or any other company's data that shows max. At least work up from one grain below this +/- depending on Zodiac reading for the day.
