Hey all,

I bought the RCBS 22-45 Cal universal decapping die, when I brought it home I went to use it and the case neck wont fit around the base of the decapping shaft (Where the expander ball would be on a FL sizing die).

I took the center shaft out and measured it to find out it measures .222",  call me crazy but isn't the idea of a universal decapping die to just decap the brass with out touching the case neck at all?   I went to cabelas and measured 3 more on the shelf, and they are all .222".

I certainly don't want my universal decapping die to be expanding my case necks, especially since it's not really an expander ball and is knurled which would tear up the necks.

Anyone else seen/heard of this?

Are all the universal decapping dies like this?    If not which one(s) arn't so I can buy one of them?

Thanks,

I have the Lee decapper and never really paid it any attention until now.
I have never noticed it interfering with the cases, but then again, I have not been reloading that long.

I just measured it and it's .2015.

.2015 wont ever touch the case neck, that's how it should be!

My RCBS universal decapping die is the same way.  It will decap fine if the .223 brass hasn't been resized yet but hits the neck of resized brass.  It sucks because I wanted to use it in the first stage of my progressive to clear media from the flash hole.

I had the same problem when I received mine.  Called RCBS and they sent me a smaller capture nut that has a smaller diameter that fits a .223 case neck.

That must be how mine was sold.  It doesn't come anywhere close to the inside of the neck.

Just curious, why bother with a separate decapping die just because you are using a progressive?  I use a Hornady LnL, and I just let the decapper in the sizing die do its' job... it knocks any media in the flash hole out along with the old primer with ease.

I do have a decapping-only die, the cheap Lee one... I use it only on occasions when i need to decap a case with a live primer, etc.

I use a Lee Universal decapper die as my first die in my 550, no problems. 223 and 7.62 x 39.

just measured my RCBS & Lee universal decappers.

RCBS
rod -.218
knurled pin holder - .208

Lee
rod - .203

both are 20+ years old possibly RCBS has made some changes since then.

Because most of us decap our brass before cleaning, this way it helps clean the primer pocket as well.

I and most don't even use the sizing die in my progressive because I like to size, trim(deburr & chamfer neck is done at same time as trimming), remove crimp(if needed), clean primer pocket, uniform primer pocket(if needed), and deburr the flash hole(if needed), then to the progressive just to prime(if I don't do that by hand as well), charge, seat, & crimp. Some people that don't clean and fully prep their brass every loading I guess would just use the sizing/decapping die in station one, then primer the dirty primer pockets and finish loading the brass on the progressive with none of the prep steps mentioned above.

But even if you have to trim your brass you don't know(or do it) until after sizing and it's a pain to size on a progressive and then have to remove the brass to trim, it's just easier to size separate (then prep) and finish loading on the progressive.

Thats my take on seperate decapping and sizing for that matter. JMHO

PS: I also use a LnL AP but with a LnL single stage for decapping, sizing, (and all steps of precision rounds). I bought an extra set of dies one setup for the AP and one for the single stage so I dont have to keep adjusting dies between the two.

I just took apart my new RCBS universal decapping die and it does measure .220, but this is still smaller than any case neck of a fired piece of .223 brass so their is no real problem with the size of the decapping rod.

Now if you want to use in to clear flash holes on sized brass(which it's not designed to do) I guess this could be a problem but I would just put it(the decapping rod) in a drill and take some emery cloth, sand paper, file(something) and turn the knurled section down to .215-8" so it will fit fine and should be an easy task for anyone to do.
