This ought to start a fight....but I'm curious to hear the arguments on both sides.

True or False?:  You can load match grade (FGMM equivalent) ammo on a 650.

Easily.

I would say true but it is going depend largley on the individual doing the setup. It's also going to depend on the components used/ once fired brass/ new brass, does it need trimed etc etc........

[#3]
True, you can

I dunno if yer question is specifically aimed at the 650 or any progressive press, but I have only loaded on my Lee Loadmaster.....308 that will shoot 1/4" groups where as FGMM in my rifle is 3/4"at best.....didn't even own a single stage up until a few years ago.

I don't have one, but if you watch what you're doing, I'd say better than a factory.

I would say true depending on what powder you are using.

the 650 is a good machine, but man you can go brain dead in a real short time, just to much auto index, auto case feed, auto, auto of all most everything, no "feel" to it...I think  the 550 is better for the loading of large amounts of ammo used in the 200 and 300 yd stages of NM shooting...600 yd ammo.. w/ 80 gr 223 heads and 168 heads for the 308, there was never a quality problem with the  Dillon, but a single stage w/ a quick top dial adjustable RCBS micro head seater, Lyman single round powder dump and a good ol' Lee single stage press is my choice for the long range rifle ammo

Do you suppose that Fed GMM is loaded by hand on a single stage at the factory?

Obviously it is machine loaded and the powder charge is measured and dropped by volume, rather than weighed.

The U.S. Palma team ammo was loaded on Dillon progressives.

So YES you can.

Yes you can.

However.  Just about every serious competitor  I know hand weighs each charge for the 600 yard (or longer) stage.

Most any progressive will...if you prep and trim good brass properly first.

If you sling it in and out like one of the "YouTube" videos show, insinuating no case prep at all, I doubt it.

I can on my Hornady LnL... I don't see why you couldn't on the Dillon.  That said, for "super duper accurate" rounds (which I don't bother with a lot), I will load them on my single-stage and trickle the powder in.... though to be honest (maybe it's my lack of shooting ability) I don't get any better results out of that process than I do with the progressive at the ranges I shoot at (200 yards at the range... shoot cloverleafs with various .308 rifles).

No argument from me- I've done it.

I would say true, I feel I can load better quality ammo than production simply because I take my time and monitor the process slowly but my 550 is all manual.

...once upon a time, some years ago.  They also tried using Ruger rifles once upon a time too.  Haven't tried that again either.

That said... I think you could load very, very good long range ammo on a 650 (I've done it on a 550) but I don't think you're going to be doing it using a stock powder measure and going full tilt.  A Whidden tool head w/ powder funnel, Uniquetek tool head clamping setup, and a good seating die like a Redding Compeition or Forster Ultra seater go a long ways towards that goal.

YMMV,

Monte

You can surpass the the consistency of Gold Medal ammunition with ammunition loaded on an XL-650.  The ammunition used for all of the 10-shot groups pictured below was loaded on an XL-650 (and fired from a Krieger barreled AR-15.)

I load ammo that is better than any Match ammo I have tried using either of my 550's.
