I have come into possession of a large quantity of 55gr. softpoint varmint bullets.  Does anyone know what the downside of these bullets is?  Will they perform o.k. at short distances for self defense?

what Kind. we did a bunch of homemade ballistic tests and found alot of the soft point bullets prefoprmed really well. in fact they actually held together better than  the v-maxs and ballistic tips . we used water jugs and wet phone books so it was homemade and results didnt really have a constant except of the water jigs but it was fun and cool. I would use them . the soft points we used were winchester, hornady, and some midway brand soft points

I load the Hornady 55g SP for Jackrabbits here. What brand of bullets? Some thin jacketed bullets may come apart in a fast twist barrel.

Varmint bullets were designed for rapid to explosive expansion.

The opposite design of a defence bullet.

At close range, the expansion would increase.

What brand of bullet?

They are all junk. You need to mail them to me at once for proper disposal.

When Varmit bullets work they can be spectacular but when they fail, it can suck. You can bet that when the FBI specifies they want a certain minimum penetration that there is a reason for it, heavy clothing and heavy individuals can play havoc with the performance of varmint bullets on target
