Anyone heard of using just plain uncooked white rice to clean used brass? The guy at the local store told me that's what he uses in his tumblers to clean out the brass.

Sounds like a cheap alternative to buying the specialized dry media. Any input?

That only works on Japanese and Chinese ammo cases. And some stuff from India & Pakistan.

Sounds like a horrible idea.   Crushed walnut media at your local pet store (reptile dept.) is about $14.00 for a large bag.

Rice will work fine. I tried it years ago when I read about it somewhere. I don't know if it's any cheaper than walnut shell, though.

Even if it is cheaper, it doesn't last as long. Just go buy some walnut shell at the local pet store.

But, can you eat the walnut shell afterwards?  Obviously, rice provides added utility in this particular application.  And, its tastes so good.  I think I'm going to tell the wife to make some of that Varget flavored rice tonight.  Perhaps something exotic, like N133 rice.  That old time Finland flavored rice  is a delightful side dish at almost any meal.

Some folks have tried it, but rice breaks down to quickly,  Just go to Petsmart and buy a 20 pound bag of Kaytee Parakeet Litter. Should be under 20 bucks.

When I started reloading in the early 1970's rice was sometimes used.   I have a vague recollection of once trying it mixed with rouge, though I don’t remember where I got that idea.

This was before the days of Petsmart and such.

I works, but turns to powder pretty quickly.   And unless stored securely it can attract mice and such.

Nowadays I don’t see the point.

The rice cleans casees very well and they are very pollished

I used rice for a little while. Then I had some mold up on me i think. Smelled awful. So I never did that again. It's something to use if you absolutely have nothing else IMHO.

Sounds like a good SHTF option.

Of course you'd be better suited cooking/eating the rice you'd normally use for tumbling in that scenario.

I think of it this way........

It's a SIN to waste food.
