I have 223 brass that I am trying to reprime. They are head stamped FC 223 Rem. I am using CCI 400 primers. For a tool, I am using a Lee Auto Prime hand tool. I have used it before and it works good. My problem is that the primers will not go into the pocket. I got 5 to go in and it took a lot of pressure. I quit when I got one smashed in the tool. I am using the #4 bushing. What is wrong with this picture?

Yup, crimped primer pocket...
The cheapest way to fix it is to ream it out with one of these: Lee Chamfer Tool $3... - AG |
| I bought some 1x brass and I get this once in a while. I just throw away the damn case since it was pissing me off. Well I've only seen 10-20 out of the 1500 rds 223 I've loaded so far so 1 out of 100 was not bad enough for me to investigate it further. I would like to see if the Chamfer tool works since I have one. |

I tried the chamfer tool and it worked. Is there a better way to to this, it is going to take forever to do 1000 rounds. I also found that I needed to redo a few to clean them better. Best is the Dillon tool... makes removing the crimp a breeze. I think they are $80. I have also used the RCBS reamer chucked into a drill press. Much better than each one by hand. - AG |

Good thing Lee gear fits my needs, well I did get a RCBS Bullet Pulling die for 223, since the inertia puller does not work hardly at all. |

Be careful, you can remove too much metal with a chamfer tool. Best to get a hand primer pocker crimp remover. Link |

I have used a Dremel sanding drum as a holder for the Lee chamfer tool. Remove the sandpaper from the rubber drum and the Lee tool will slip right on. Chuck it in a drill at relatively low speed and go to work. Like posted above, you can over do it. Just a light touch to the tool and the crimp is gone. go slow and you will learn how much it takes to just remove the crimp. A magnifying glass or jewlers loupe to view the pocket is nice too.

If you reload any larger quantity of crimped brass the Dillon super swage is worth its weight in gold. Just for clarification, it is not a reaming tool or chamfer tool, it is a swaging tool, it presses the crimp out, back into the case head. Its built like a tank and you can de-crimp over a thousand rounds an hour if you're in a hurry. |

Are you using it per the directions? You have to hold the puller so that it bounces after the hit. You need to hold it very lightly. I've never needed more than 2-3 hits to pull anything. |

I'd say 600 is entirely possible but I can't swage them as fast as I can run my 550. I wish there was a way to swage on the 550. |
