Just started picking up wheel weights for casting boolits. "Free" wheel weights. Tripped over one of the buckets in the shed trying to get yard sale stuff out for the weekend. http://i450.photobucket.com/albums/qq221/firefighter_dm/DSCN0255.jpg http://i450.photobucket.com/albums/qq221/firefighter_dm/DSCN0256.jpg http://i450.photobucket.com/albums/qq221/firefighter_dm/DSCN0258.jpg http://i450.photobucket.com/albums/qq221/firefighter_dm/DSCN0257.jpg When all said and done for today 53 Ingots and 2 5gal. buckets still full. Will have to see if the wife will let me play in the back yard a little during the yard sale Sat.

Nice pile! I love to see the results of a day spent smelting. Is that an aluminum pot you have on the burner though? If it is, you should cease use and get a steel or iron pot. Aluminum is dangerous. It can fail without warning and leave you standing in a puddle of molten metal. This is generally regarded as a bad thing... |

abpt1 - I use candle leftovers from the wife to flux. At this point I just plan to use Wheel Weights, never know I might want to play with alloys some day.
SoldierBilly1 - Plan on starting with 9mm and 40s&w but have not gotten molds yet, just making the buckets of lead into smaller stacks of lead. Bigdb1 – The pot I am using is an iron pot I found at a second hand store for $5. |

Are you sorting out any zinc weights? If not, are you using a thermometer to keep your pot below the melting point of zinc? zinc will ruin your alloy.
Looking good! Do not allow your locl birds to fly over. Bird poo in the pot would be something you would not soon forget! |

Report for Saturday – 72 more ingots.
bigdb1 - No insult taken, thanks for the info. No Alum. = not swimming in molten metal, sounds good to me. HABU – I sort out the zinc, steel and stick on wheel weights and keep the temp down so if I miss one it will just float to the top and be skimmed out. I’ll keep the BB gun handy and set a perimeter with shoot to kill orders. Just kidding. |
