Couple of questions. What is the difference between rem 6 1/2 small rifle and rem 7 1/2 small rifle br primers. Also, I herd a nasty rummor about new primers being made to last only 2 years. Can anyone conferm, or is this bs.. oh yea, I'm new to reloading, hope it is not shortlived.

BR primers have more consistent ignition between them or less Standard Deviation of velocity. They are for bench rest shooters but will work on any small rifle brass, just more expensive. Primer manufactures CANNOT make primers that work and only last 2 years. It is old bogus information. We have been through this primer shortage thang at least 2 times before. |

The 6 1/2 primer is intended for low pressure rifle cartridges such as the .22 Hornet. It can be used for .223 Rem with start loads in the 38000 range; consult a load manual that lists pressure along with the charge. Do not use this primer in .223 Rem unless you are willing to restrict the load to low pressure.
The 7 1/2 primer is a tough and very good primer for shooting high pressure rifle loads such as .223 Rem up to its maximum recommended pressure. The limited life business is gun counter baloney. |

From Remington.......Quote:
In rifle cartridges, the 6-1/2 small rifle primer should not be used in the 17 Remington, 222 Remington or the 223 Remington. The 7-1/2 BR is the proper small rifle primer for these rounds. Warning: When primers are selected incorrectly, misfires, damage to your firearm, and/or personal injury may occur. Visit the ballistics tables on our website. Recommended primers for each rifle and pistol cartridge are listed in these tables. Aloha, Mark PS......It's a Rumor. |
