Hey all, I hope you can shed some light. I just picked up 3lbs of this at the local store. I have not used this stuff before but have used imr4895. So here is my question. I opened up one of these bottles and noticed a strong smell. Then opened the other two and they smelled the same. Kinda like some kind of cleaning solution. I did not get any weird smell from the imr4895. So is this a normal for H4895. Thanks

Most all powders have somewhat of a "solvent" type smell. Some more than others though. The powder is likely fine.

I noticed the same thing from my containers of powder.

Just loaded up a batch of each tonight.

IMR didn't have a strong smell like Hodgens did.

Powder should be GTG.

It's probably fine.

H4895 is a completely different powder than IMR 4895, (literally made half the word away) you will notice it is a different color, as it has much less graphite as a retardant. It has the same application as IMR 4895, but you can not just substitute one for the other. It's just slightly faster, so will use about a grain or so less powder.  Make certain you are using the correct data.

Thanks, i was using the imr4895 @41.6 and getting around 2530fps with 147 bullets and LC brass. I'll probably drop this stuff down to 41.0 and see where i am.

My 308 147gr load is 43 grs of H4895    I'm using LC brass and Winchester primers. Good solid load, runs my FAL just fine with no gas adjustments.

Uh... start low and work up? Did you forget the importance of this? It is of my opinion that you're asking for trouble just to drop .6 grain off of a known load for a different powder and try there. Find your max load, take 10% off then work up.
