I have been dipping in to my stash lately to go shooting . So I have to load some of my ss109 to replace what I have shot .

I am loading
LC brass 1x fired 1.750 =/- .10
fed 205 primers .
SS109 62gr FMJBT(SC) seated @ 2.250 =/- .5
so far I have tested 24.gr / 24.5gr / 25gr of Varget with no pressure signs shot ggod but I would like to move up to 25.5 / 26gr...?
Has anyone tested these two loads and if so could you tell me if I am going to be fishing primers out of my trigger group?

TIA

all I will say is that it is tough to have too much pressure with Varget in a .223....

According to Hodgdon and Ammo-guide you are close to the published max. at 26 gr.Varget for 63 gr. bullet.  Same for 62 gr. would give a little cushion.  Please report back your results.

Tried this a while ago, here is a pic of my target.

Bottom right was SS-109 and Varget, other targets were 68 gr Hornaday test loads. BLC2 did not do well, Varget a lot better.

Rifle used, AR-15 Oly heavy barrel upper, 16", 1 in 9, free float hand guard, RRA match trigger, 3x9 Leopold.100 yd groups shot off the bench.

LC brass trimmed to 1.750, WSR, 26.5 grs Varget, bullet seated to mid cannelure, very light crimp with Lee FCD.

IIRC 26.5 grs of Varget was all I could get into the case, no pressure signs in my rifle.

Please work up your load carefully. Good luck.

I've used similar loads with H4895(slightly faster) with no ill effect at all, so while you are pushing it, it's not excessive. You know what to do.

If he is replenishing his zombie killer stash, then he may want to keep the speed up at the target to assure equal terminal ballistic performance as the M855 and sacrifice a tighter group at a lesser velocity.  That would be one answer as to why.

Well the M855 I bought was 3000-3100 FPS and I would like my hand loads to match that or get close .

Shot 10 rds @25gr and 5 @25.5gr The 25gr shot better than the 25.5gr.... but there was a strong wind so I am going to have to try them again ...

I am guessing there is a reasion why the SS109 is run that hot
Its not like they just thought about it really hard and just guessed a speed ...I am guessing there was a good deal of research

More likely a bunch of viewgraph engineering with a little empirical design from experience.

I have used 25.3 Varget with a 69 Sierra, if yours is a 5.56 chamber it should be OK for sure with 26 grains and a 62.  The longer throat of a 5.56 will lower pressures.

I put 25.0 gr Varget behind a 77 SMK in my Wylde chambered SPR and showed minimal pressure signs.

Go here and read up.  Lots of good info on the development and performance of the 5.56 x 45 military rounds.
Note that terminal ballistic performance is a function of impact speed as well as structural design of the bullet.

My "standard load" is 26 gr. of Varget with a 65 gr. Sierra gameking, snt it shows no signs of being over pressure. Different bullets, even in the same weight range will not always have the same results, so work up carefully.
