I got a good deal on a Hornady Lock N Load from a buddy of mine. It is an older one Ser#12xx and was thinking of replacing the sub plate with the ezject one. Is it worth the $60 for the new ezject sub plate? I installed three grease zerks in the press. What kind of grease do you guys use?

I can't comment on the EZ Eject subplate because I never "upgraded" mine, it's hard to justify fixing something that isn't broke.  I haven't had any ejection problems with my press yet, even when loading the 9mm which seems to be the most complained about press jamming round.  Guess I'm just lucky.

As far as greasing the press I use high pressure grease and it works well, the only reason I use high pressure grease is because that's what my tractor calls for and it's always in my grease gun

First it is $30 for the conversion kit now. It can be ordered from Hornady. However I ordered one march 2nd and still haven't gotten it yet. Have a couple weeks to wait yet hopefully. Something you may want to check on is if you can for sure convert it. I read something somewhere that aid the presses below 7000 couldn't be converted.  I have no idea why and am not convinced you can't. Best suggestion is call Hornady and ask.

There were a couple threads a couple months ago where a guys had got hold of the new presses and the reports were that the system worked perfectly. One kink was that instead of using the #1 for .45 ACP like we all did on the old style you need the #45 which is specifically for .45 ACP. Other than that it seems like it runs great.

You do realize that if you do upgrade that you have to use the new shell plates. You can get an RMA # from Hornady and get any you have converted for $10 each.

As for grease General Purpose is fine. Nothing fancy is needed.

I bought a new #1 shell plate from Amazon about two weeks ago. It has the new groove for the EZ-Ject system. Well it appears to anyway.

I've seen where the new #1 shell plate is advertised for .308 Winchester now, while the new #45 is sold as the proper one for .45 ACP. I'm not sure it matters much since the diameter of the .308 Win and .45 ACP are pretty much identical. The only difference being the thickness of the base (.045 on the .308 as opposed to .050 on the .45).

I guess I'll try and use my new #1 shell plate on both.

Those that have the new system have said on this forum that the #1 does not work with the new system. The groove is too generous on the .45 case and hangs up with the #1. They have also said the #45 works perfectly.

Go ahead and try it and let us know what happens.

You will have the outer retaining spring groove and another groove inside of that for the eject function that will go almost all the way to the detent balls if yours is the new system plate.
