I just bought a prochrono digital the other day and of course Im thinking of this after the fact.  Do they make an accessory for this unit that shows you the velocities back at your bench such as a printer?  Or can you read the display fine from 10-15 feet away just fine? How necessary is the remote they sell, does it show velocity readings?

Thanks, Jon

Hey Jon... I have the same unit.  No, their remote doesn't have a display... I can read the velocities just fine from the bench (big display).  The main reason I chose this unit over the other brand is I've had some shooters say it's less temperamental than the others, and can register shots more reliably; so far I've found that to be true.  The remote really isn't necessary unless you shoot at public or private ranges that often have others on the firing line with you; without the remote you have to wait until the other shooters are done (of course!) before you can step out there and switch to the next string on the chrono... the remote allows you to do that from the safety of the bench, and you don't annoy your fellow shooters with constant requests to cease fire to hit a button.  Therefore, I found the remote necessary.

The Remote DOES allow you to connect, via the serial port, to your home PC or a laptop using Hyperterminal (or in the case of Vista, a 3rd party terminal program; I use PUTTY), and dump the stats and shot information into the computer... I then dump it into Excel and use it in my load development.

All in all, I'm pretty happy with it.

Thanks dedon, I bought this unit for the same reason......the reviews and correct readings.     Unfortunatly I almost always shoot at public ranges.  Is the remote necessary or can I just hand wright down the velocities as I go.   Does it stop recording velocities after so many shots that would require me to reset it?

Thanks again, Jon

I have had mine so long I don't remember. I do know it will record 99 shots so it probably will just go that far and stop. It might break them into 10 shot strings. I don't really remember. The down side would be keeping track of the additional data. With a variety of test loads you would most likely lose the additional data which is very handy in load development. It would be there but be useless when mixed with a variety of loads.

I wont be using  so much for load development at the time Because I have developed all my loads over the last couple years. Some while using a buddies chrony and others while just using results I saw on my targets.    For now I want to use it to test my max spreads and deviations to see how close I am. More importantly I plan to use it to get accurate velocites to create some ballistic charts for all of my loads.

They just came out with an accessory that will plug into your laptop with the lead coming from the prochoni. They supply the lead. It will save the data there for future use.   It is half the price of the digital readout ( about $45 or so as I recall).  I think Midway is carrying it so you may be able to get a full description there.  I don't recall if you can control the chroni from the laptop however.

Extra screens are nice.  458 socom does a hefty job on them.

It stores up to 9 strings with up to 99 shots per string... When working up loads, I change strings because it's more convenient for me to just let it do the math determining Extreme Spread, Standard Deviation, Averages, etc. as I'm working up a load.  You could just set it out there, and shoot across it all you like, just jotting down on a piece of paper that shot 1 is X with X amount of powder, etc, no need to jot down the velocities... all the way up to 99 shots (after each shot, the chrono will advance to the next shot automatically), and do your own math when you get home... so you don't have to have the remote, it is a convenience.  The unit will store those numbers until you get home and jot 'em down... it even stores them if the battery dies.

When you get it and play with it (or read the manual) it'll become clear.  I bought the remote because I liked being able to change strings without having to wait for a break in the fire to walk up to it and change it... and I like being able to dump the data right into my PC, but I did use it for a month or so without the remote, and got along fine that way as well.
