As mentioned, I got a comparator this weekend and tonight I went through my 30-06 rounds and they varied as much as .015".  I set the bullet seater up to get them all close.  They still varied as much as .008" when I was finished.  I used Hornady SST 180 grain bullets.  Is this the bullets fault, the cases not being the same or what?  Thanks

Its the bullets.  They are not match grade rounds and remember .008" is about the thickness of two sheets of paper.  Even Sierra SMK's vary by about .001" measured with a comparator on the ogive.  I wouldnt sweat it.

WIteacher,

Valkyrie is correct..... but I also think it could be your technique.

I use a comparator and calipers to measure some thousand(s) of bullets every week.  It's what I do..... see my tagline.

You have to develop a method of inserting the bullet tip in the comparator, holding it. and then wiggling and twisting the brass to allow it to "settle" and seat into it's shortest possible configuration within the comparator/caliper assembly.  You have to do this the exact same way every time or you induce inconsistencies into the length readings you see.

It takes practice to acheive a consistent way of doing this.

Best,

If you are crunching powder they can vary also.
