A friend of mine loaned me some dies today, they were his grandfathers, and when I got them home to look them over I got a surprise
Can I just mount the die and in the press and screw down SLOWLY on the pin with vice-grips to push the primer out?

What die is that? A sizing or seater die?  Does the round have powder in it?

If it's a live round I wouldn't touch it, if just a case that's primed, I'd detonate the primer, perhaps by whacking it with a center punch,  and then drill thru it and tap the case per above, but only if it doesn't have powder in it

If that's a live round and you drop that thing and the primer goes, you'll have a mini grenade on your hands...feet, eyes, room, etc.

If the case is empty a little bb gun practice is in order.

I would suggest(to be completely safe) you loosen the decapping rod nut and try to make sure it is just a primed case. If you were to "feel" around with the rod I am sure you could tell  if it is a loaded round but you never know what some idiots can pull off. Better yet you might be able to get the complete decapping assembly out through the top of the die then can can look inside with a light to make sure. If it is just a primed case pour some oil inside wait a week and then drive the primer out as you suggested.

If I thought it was loaded I would ....for the safety of others I wont tell what I would do.

You might try to slip the shell holder onto the case while slipping it into the ram at the same time.  Then try and pull it out.

Got it out. I pushed it out by slowly turning the rod down.
There was no powder, I got the rod to come out first to make sure, then pushed it out.

Thanks
