Not a preferred practice, but you can do it.  You need to start out well under max load and work your way up SLOWLY.

In IPSC, a lot of shooters (who are very experienced reloaders) use small rifle primers in their .38 super loads.

Depending on case size, it will have a greater impact on smaller cases.  IE: In a nine mm, you can run into pressure problems in a hurry.

I would not recommend the practice unless you were forced to do so.  The cost of primers is really not that significant to risk a kaboom.

Also, depending on the condition of your pistol or revolver, the primer may or may not be set off by the hammer's fall.

But, if you're talking about those "special" pistol rounds........well, some re-loading data may call for it.

Hint:  Trade for what you want.

It depends on both the load and the gun, as both the previous posters mentioned.  I'd stay away from it without some really overriding reason to do it that way.  Say for .30 carbine in a revolver, you'd definitely use small rifle primers.  44Magnum in a rifle?  Maybe...

If it's just because that's what you have, If I were you, I'd go to some trouble to get small pistol primers instead...

I wouldn't.

Best to use the correct primer, except in SHTF/Zombie invasion scenario.

yes,  when i first did it i always dropped a grain of powder and worked up. it turns out i went right back to my old load.  the cups are thicker to handle the pressure but the primer charge was the same.
