I am using a RCBS competition powder measure with micrometer. I have only been experimenting with Varget but have some other powders to try (non extruded). I am also using a Pact digital scale, stays in the same place, no vibrations and no drafts that are perceptible to the skin. Problem is I am working up loads and measure every one while doing so. Most of the time I do not get more than +/- .1 grains but occasionally that thing is off by .4 grains. I don't think I can trust it if this persists. The scale checks within .02 grains with the check weights so I think it is the powder thrower. I expected more from this RCBS tool. Has anyone had a similar problem with extruded powder? I am hoping a switch in powder will fix the problem or I will have to load everything .4 under max, or measure every one. |

I'm also using Varget with a RCBS Uniflow w/Mic. Same varying results. I have conceeded that individual measuring with Varget is normal. It just depends on how it settles into the chamber. But, yes, get a baffle in there. It may help but it won't cure it and it can't hurt. mince |

.4 is a lot of variation.. I've fought this battle also with both Varget and IMR4895. All I can do is list the things that I do. First thing is to make sure the scale is on a "level" hard surface, check it with a level. Vibrate the powder down before setting the charge weight. Tap the powder tube both on the upstroke and down stroke. That keep me from going to fast too. Keep the powder tube full. With that I've been able to hold IMR4895 to .2 grains variation on a Dillon RL550 loading 30-06. |
