My dad brought over his new 45 Long Colt to try out a few weeks ago, we put 15rds through it and he gave me the brass. I got the brass out today to run through the tumbler and noticed one has a split from about 1/4" from the bottom all the way up to about 1/8" from the mouth.
I can't remember who the maker of the gun is, but it doesn't have the transfer bar and the firing pin is on the hammer.
The ammo is Remington-UMC.
What do you think, just a bad case or should I tell him to have the gun looked at?

Sorry about the pic had to use my cell phone.

The firearm maker would be a nice thing. It could either be a oversized chamber or a bad casing...........take your pick.

Does the case look excessively bulged? If it does, have a gunsmith look it over,, if not, then bad/hard case.

I called him, it's an EMF, but he wasn't at home and couldn't remember what model. It's supposed to be a copy of the 1st generation Colt.
The case does have a slight bulge where the split is, but not real noticeable. I told him to bring it with him the next time he comes over and I'll mic the chambers.
I looked over the other cases and they all look fine.

I'd bet it's a oversized chamber.

Number the chambers with a marker so the chambers can be tracked then next time the revolver is shot.

Hello everybody,

Say, the new issue of Reloader Magazine (Special Handgun issue) has a very
good article on cylinder charging hole diameters and what the barrel should be
in relationship to the chamber diameter.

I have an very old issue that addresses these diameters.

Charging holes can vary any where; 45 Long Colt  .457 - .452.
There are good diameters for Lead and Jacketed bullets.

You will have to do some research on the web what it should actually be.

Probably start at trying Cast Boolits dot com.   A lot of good info there but you
will have to read and study what is said.

Good Luck.

I have an older Uberti that has cylinder throats around 453-455 and a barrel that is 455.  I use cast bullets of 455 and it shoots good w/o leading.  If I use the .452 size I use for newer guns and Rugers, it doesn't shoot as well and leads the barrel.  Your cylinder chambering may be oversize.  For me, 45 Colt cases last a long time, they do not start splitting like the OP until about 15 reloads
