What can any experienced person tell me about the MEC 600?

It seems my family now is in possession of one, and apparently it's coming to Florida.

...

I think this means I have to start shooting clays?

I have one for 12 ga.  It's simple and gets the job done.

Though, now a days, I find it cheaper and more convenient to just to buy promo 12 ga. ammo.

Good press. Don't tighten down the adjustment locking screws too tight. They will strip. It will take some trial and error to get your adjustments worked out to make perfect loads, but all in all, it's a decent press for the money. The addition of a primer feed will speed things up for you.

Good press, I like mine.

With the price of shot, don't load much 12 ga anymore.

Mec 600 is a good, no frills press.  The only troubles people tend to have is the can caps getting broken.  I agree you can't reload 12 gauge as cheap as you can buy the various promos and other value packs.

I really like mine and haven't had any problems with it. I reload .410 shells all the time, have one in 12 gauge but don't have it set up.

Thanks guys.

So is there a trend for people to stop shooting 12 gauges due to the cost these days?  If some of you gave  up on 12 gauges, does that mean you're firing 20 gauges at clays, or just not shooting the bigger shotguns at all anymore?

You'll be able to feed a 2 or 3 round per week habit of Trap or Skeet with that 600.

Clays is a lot higher round count.

With a 7/8 bar 12ga is just as cheap as 20.

Last time I did the math with promo 12 ga. vs. re-loads..........I came out almost even, with a very slight edge for the re-loads.
________________________________________________

But this time........say I purchased at the local big box store:

Powder -Clays (using 15 grs.)........................ $121 for 8 lbs.
Primers -Fed 209A ..........................................     32 for 1000
Wads    -WAA12 ..................................................       6 for 250
Shot #8 -Lawrence ..........................................     50 for 25 lbs.
Hulls -WWAA ...................................................     FREE

Using the calculator……..

www.trapshooters.com/reloadcalc.htm

So...........$5.73 for 25 rounds.  *Of course, your prices will vary.

I bought Rem. "Gun Club- Light Target Loads" promo 12 ga., 2-3/4", 1-1/8 oz. #8 shot, for $4.50 a box yesterday at the gun show.  And, sale prices on the "other brands" of promo ammo are pretty close to that.

And, there is a TIME factor to consider.

So, I buy the promo ammo.  I go through about 1 box a month at the local SASS Match.  A little more, IF I miss more.

For me it was the insane price of shot.

Just put the shotgun in the back of the safe.

Started casting for my 45 Auto, fired 250 today.

Also shot the deer rifle some, 308 bolt gun.

I looked into it a little on Midway.com - is non-lead shot actually cheaper?

How well does steel shot work for trap or clays?

Not very well.

I am certainly no steel expert, but I am nearly 100% sure you do not want to be using that for anything unless its required by law (waterfowl and other area requirements).

In loaded ammo.......steel shot and the "other PC" shot.......usually, sells at a higher price than lead shot loaded ammo.

Then, go figure.........

Around here..........there is a public hunting area that requires steel (or other PC shot).   There is even a practice area for use with steel shot.  Lead shot is verboten.

And, not even a mile away is another public shooting area.   Where lead shot is OK to use.

You think the birds KNOW?

But, maybe I shouldn't mention it.   Since, there might be a "Tree Hugger" around here.
