When I started reolading I told myself I would avoid buying 'unnecessary' stuff and put the money towards components.  Today I got an unexpected letter from my credit card company, it seems that my 'miles' can be cashed in for a whopping 50$!

So, I figure this extra money can go towards some 'wants'.  One of those 'wants' is a bunch of plastic ammo boxes.  I have a bunch of the plastic inserts from factory ammo but, it would be nice to have some boxes with a hinged lid, I could put labels with load data inside them and they wouldn't spill.

I'm currently loading 9mm, 38, 40, and 45.  I'm not loading massive quantities yet but, production is ramping up.  (i used to shoot 100s of rounds a week and i'd like to get back to that point)

My questions are:
Should I get the boxes or is there some other cool reloading gadget that I can get for around 50$?
If I go with the boxes should I go with 50rd or 100rd boxes? Some of both? How many?

just lookin for ideas, thanks in advance

I REALLY like the ones sold by Midway.  When you buy them in bulk they are very cheap, and they last nearly forever.  I get the ones that hold 100 for pistol and small rifle calibers, and the ones that hold 50 for calibers like .30/06, as they get a little heavy with 100 in them.  YMMV

100 round ones for 5.56, fifty round ones for .45 ACP.  Yes, you need these.  I got lucky in a little gun store in Angleton.  I was just starting to reload for 5.56.  I paid $6 for one MTM 100 round box.  Into this gun store I walked--they had six of the same boxes barely used for $150 each.  I bought the lot!

how many boxes do you guys have?

with my C+R discount at Grafs i can get:
20 50rd boxes for .40 and .45
and
5 100 rd boxes for .38 (i don't shoot too many of those)
and
10 100rd boxes for 9mm
for $48.55

(i sent a C+R to midway but haven't gotten a response yet, is there pricing comparable to this?)

These are a great deal for the price, and I have at least 50 boxes in various calibers, my only complaint is that if you drop a full box, it will break!  That being said , I just ordered some more bulk boxes of them from Midway.  The green MTM boxes are basically unbreakable, but they cost almost double the price of Midways.

Personally the MTM brand boxes are the sturdiest of the plastic boxes on the market.  The rest seem to be from experience, brittle especially in colder temps.  Do not ask how I know this....I know a guy that just snaps up at the range empty ammo boxes.  They work great for stroring ammo.

For me...I load handgun ammo in large qty, I store them bulk in 50cal ammo cans...then just dish out into the mtm boxes. Of course some ammo just does not lend itself towards MTM type boxes...moon clipped ammo...I thow them into zip lock bags!

I started with the plastic boxes, then as I came across more and more brass, I found myself having to buy more and more boxes to keep up with all the ammo I was making.  Now I'm storing ammo in Tidy Cat buckets and .223 on stripper clips, although I still have all the boxes I originally bought

Gave up after 1800 rds

I got some of these cardboard boxes with styrofoam holders from Midway and they work great.  They're light and easy to store until you need them, and also easy to stick a label on and stack away.  Plus reusable dozens of times.  I use these boxes to store my plinking ammo.
Cardboard Boxes

And also some of the plastic boxes like these to store my hunting and target ammo.

Plastic Boxes

This is about 30 or 40 bucks worth of boxes but the organization aspect was well worth it because I'm kind of anal like that

At Gunsite I picked up a huge pile of factory .45 ACP boxes.
The plastic tray type ones with a cardboard box.
They have all been through many cycles now.

For other calibers I have the translucent blue Dillon boxes in pretty large quantities.

Tidy Cat is your friend.  The buckets are around 5-7 gallon capacity, and they close and pretty much seal great.  They're also sturdy as all get out.  I've used them for saw horse bucks, stools, short scaffold supports and oh yes, storing stuff in.  They're great.  I've got a bunch of them with sorted batches of various calibers in them, and one is my brass recycle bin (not yet a quarter full at the moment).

The longer you reload, the more ammo boxes you will acquire.

After a while loose or on stripper clips in a ammo box is the only way.

I took my wife to the range to shoot .22cal and there was a bonanza of brass on the ground. She started getting antsy after about a half hour. When I went to the trash can and started pulling ammo boxes out she muttered, "Im married to a bag lady!"

Yep, Ziplocks in 50cal cans, but when I take out a bag I just go to the range with it

I went through the plastic box phase and still have some ammo boxed in some of them. Got quite a few empties I've not used to this point. I think I've moved on past them. The cat litter jugs sound promising, except I HATE CATS!

Get acquainted with a coworker who has cats and doesn't shoot.  Win-win!

We have an ammo whore thread and a mag whore thread.

What we need--only on arfcom--is a Plastic Box Whore Thread!

ETA: on a serious note

I think I'll go with some plastic ammo boxes, as I said before I've been using old factory ammo boxes and inserts but, I like the idea of more durable/waterproof storage.

As far as ammo cans, all mine are currently full of factory ammo and cleaning gear.  As more ammo cans come along they will store the overflow that the plastic boxes won't handle.

Tidy cat buckets: I wish I had that much brass! I do have access to five gallon buckets from work and I cleaned a few out and brought them home for future use.

Thanks everyone for your input!

If I can play my real plastic boxes are in a Flat Rate Box from the PO stuffed away.

And some for ammo, (Most are empty)

And here is my foot.

I used to snag those big Folgers boxes from work-when I was quick enough-but then I retired.  My family doesn't drink nearly enough coffee to generate a useful quantity of 'em.  And of course there's the Maxwellhouse boxes; red and round or blue and square, I don't care!  Either type is great because they're stackable and they seal nicely.
