Having been into reloading for just 5 months I'm trying different loads and recording the results. My rifle is RRA 20" AR with at least 6000 rounds thru it, 90% of that was factory ammo and most of that was 5.56. My rifle with a 1 in 8 twist has stabilized bullets as heavy & long as 77gr.SMK to as far as 200 yards. Thus far my tightest groups consistantly come with 70gr Berger VLD or Very Low Drag bullets pushed with 22.0 gr VihtaV. N135. But i've loaded only 100 rounds of those. Click link for pic.... www.ar15.com/forums/topic.html?b=6&f=42&t=248835 I seat these rounds to an OAL of 2.275 and as far as 2.295". This requires each round to be individualy chambered but I'm ok with that. Without the right tool I have not been able to find out where the throat ends and the rifling begins. I have tried the imprecise method of useing a blued bullet seated losely in a case and chambering it to see where the rifling touches the bullet ogive, but thats not working and the case is obviouly not primed nor powder charged and I'm not really interested in doing it like that. -Any recommendations for methods or tools to find out where the rifling begins? -I'm wondering if anyone else has tried .22 cal. Berger VLDs in an AR or bolt gun? How do they work for you? -Any load data for .22cal Berger VLDs you want to share? -Is there an online source for load data with Berger bullets? Got a link? Thank yous for your time. WeinerDog |
| I use Bergers alot in my Varmint rifles (.220 Swifts, .22-250s, .22-6mm AI) and I love them. I load them to magazine length in the Swifts and the .22-250, but my .22-6mm Ackley Improved is a single shot bolt, so I set them out a bit farther. I get excellent groups with Bergers out of all of my guns. I use a bullet blackened with a candle to find where the lands start and the throat ends. |
