Have been loading 55gn Hornadys FMJ and Sierra 69 gn match kings.
I have come up with some good loads using A2230 for each.
I have a 16" 1/9 carbine and a 20" 1/9 Hbar.

Since I heard so much about Varget I decided to try some with the 69gn SMK.
Loadbooks say that 25gn's should still be in the safe range. But 25gn's fills right up to the case neck and seating the bullet is packing the powder down.
Is this normal?

Using CCI 450 primers, 25gn Varget, 69gn SMK 2.250 OAL
This sound safe out of a 20" barrel?
I will chronograph them once I get some loaded and get to the range.

It's not uncommon to have compressed loads with Varget, completely normal, no big deal.  Sierra's manual lists 25.3 as it's accuracy load with 69's.  I use it, and I've gone higher with no problems in MY rifle.  FWIW, i recently had good results with AA2520 and 77 grain SMK's.  My rifle likes the 77's better than the 69's.

Thanks for the reply,
I noticed Loading Varget is a bit different then using A2230 which is a ball powder.
I have 1/9 twist barrels and don't think I could shoot 77gn bullets.
But thanks for the info!

Use a drop tube with Varget. Mine is from Midway.

Varget can be a little more work than ball powder, but worth the trouble.

I'm getting 10 shot groups, 100 yds, of 1 inch. About all I can expect from my rifle.

I'm using Hornaday's 68 gr HPBT.
