I don't know how dumb i am but here goes-I'm using an RCBS auto index progresive press and after the powder is thrown  the index plate rotates so violently it spills powder every where. is this set up error or should i be using a different press for .223?

Im not sure about your press but with my lee turret I have to grab the bullet and hold it on top of the case before it indexes to the seater die to keep the powder from spilling on smaller cases like 9mm. maybe try that?

I dont know how the RCBS is, but when I was using an old Lee the whole press would shake and would spill some powder. Does the whole press shake, or just the plate turn that is rough.

My LNL AP rarely does that unless I am using a powder the nearly fills the case like Varget. Then it maybe only shakes a stick out...

What powder are you using?

Maybe lube on certain areas will help? Sorry, but I dont have an RCBS press.

I would think there would be an adjustment for the shellplate. Your other option is to switch to a powder that doesn't fill the case quite so much.

We need more information about powder, charge weight, and so on.  Is the press a autoprogressive Pro 2000, or a different machine?

How well is the press bolted down?  Is your bench extremely solid?

Listen to AeroE. That is what I was thinking when I asked it the whole press shakes. It needs to be mounted really solid.

pro 2000 auto-index
bolted down tight on a sturdy bench
imr 3031 powder only 22.2 gr
I've been using the "hold the shell as it rotates" method but for the $$$ of this press u would think that be unnesasary

Is it a brand new press? Some things are tight when they are new.

I am assuming (i know bad thing to do) that when it indexes, it does so with an authoritative click causing the case the be jostled around spilling the powder.

Does RCBS recommend any lube at certain points? It may smooth out after being cycled a whole bunch of times.

No experience with RCBS progressives, but the same problem on Dillon 650's is minimized by shortening the spring that pushes up the indentation ball that snaps in to the hole on the shell plate.  You might ask RCBS for a couple spare springs under their no BS warranty then clip a coil or two off one and see if that helps.  Just thinking out loud

it is a fairly new press only 1k rounds out of it the set up instructions didn't call for any lube that I saw. shortening the detent spring sure makes sense to me. maybe i'll try a little grind and greese as well thanks for the input guys any other ideas would be much appreciated

The auto progressive Pro 2000 is new to the market.  If it's assembled anything like my Grand shotgun loader, a few mods might be needed along with general cleanup of flashing and fit of sliding parts.  I changed every spring but one on this press, and the spring I didn't change has a rubber band booster added.  The primer shuttle required cleanup of flashing with a file, emery cloth, and a little lapping.

I have a manual progressive Pro 2000, but it doesn't exhibit any manners like you describe.  I haven't had a chance to look at the auto version, so I don't know where the bugs might be.

I'm guessing you need to remove the shell plate and take a look at lubing everything in between the shell plate and the frame.  Also lube everything else that moves.  Use good lithium grease for most of the joints, or just light oil such as 3 in 1.  Watch over lubing around the priming mechanism in spots where the primers might get contaminated.

Call RCBS customer service.  They are knowlegable and will help you out, and if there are problems they likely know by now.  They will send out repair and update kits if required to get the press running.

thanks everyone I checked the manual again about lubing this thing and still came up empty, I then made sure my mounting bolts were tight (they were) tried calling rcbs but they're closed till mon. I'gonna take your advise AeroE and see what they say. If it doesn't work out you'll see it up on the EE. bty thanks a bunch
