When people say they skim the surface of the molten ead what is used to do this?  I may start casting soon and I was curious about this.

either a casting ladel or a plain jane table spoon works well too, just don't throw it in the dishwasher when your done casting for the day.

Don't skim it until you flux.  Drop a bit of bullet lube, wax or flux made for the purpose into the molten lead and stir.  This helps mix the tin, lead, antimony. Contaminants will float to the top.  Then skim and discard.

Here is a great cast bullet site, read the tutorials.

I took a 1/4" steel rod, heated one end red, then hammered it flat to resemble a boat oar. Maybe 1/2" wide. Seems to fit the Lee Production pot rather well for skimming.

Neat idea.. especially for the little 10lb pot..

I'm not going to be casting very much.  I want to be able to make 12 guage slugs cheaply just for blasting/plinking.  I have a converted Saiga 12.  I should have a MD Arms 20rd drum for it if they start shipping soon.  I want cheap slugs loaded to recoil not much more than field loads just for 20rd drum rapid fire.  Nothing for serious use.  I went ahead and ordered a Lee Production Pot, Lee Load All,  Lee 7/8 oz slug mold, Frankford Arsenal Flux, Frankford Arsenal mold release lube, and some allox lube.

I know the load all is not a very good press but I really won't be using it very much so I can't justify anything else.

That Load All will be fine for what you are doing.

If I may, I would like to post a part of an email I sent to a friend.  You might find it interesting:

I might have told you I was working on a shotgun slug mold and reloader.  I want to make 00 buckshot and slugs for the 12 ga.

Anyway I read the online posts at my usuall places til my eyes blead.  So much conflicting reports and agony of failed atteps, trying different hulls and wads and, etc.

My bean started to go to curd.

So I have this shotshell sitting on my puter desk and I am looking at it.  The cheapest Federal 12Ga shell you get at walmart for $16/100.  It says 11/8oz .  I think to myself...what would happen if I open this shell up and pour out the shot ,  place a nitro card in the wad and one of the slugs I made. 1oz Lee (actually .957 oz) at .675 WW quenched.
(got to have the card in the wad with the slug AND the stack has to fit the same height as the shot did to get a cood crimp.

Damn...it fit and the crimp is beautiful.

so I take it out and bam ....felt good, not to light not to hard.

Go back and load up 25 in thirty minutes.

Back to the range and the first shot was a dead on bullseye at 75 yards.  The next 2 produced a 3" group.   I was shocked.   the next 10 shot group ( the real test ) was 6".  SHOCK

I was just looking for a slug to practice with not expecting any accuracy after all the dribble from the experts.  Who by the way cant come up with a load.

I cant buy components any cheaper than those Wal Mart shells.  The hull alone is $13 / 100(primed), powder $12/100, wad $2.50/100 , nitro card $4/100

Lets review
go to warmart
buy 5 100rd value paks @ $18 = $90
add nitro card  $4 and my free cast slug = $94
produce 500 slugs with a comperable retail value of $1 / per = $500
Sell the 25# of shot for a give away price of $40
I end up with $500 worth of slugs ( HUnting quality) for $56 (All with BRAND NEW COMPONENTS and already loaded in the Hull)

ETA   USING A 590A1  Cyl Bore..Ghost Ring off bench.  I'll be getting the chrony out this week to see where I am at but it feels a little more stout than a Low Recoil and alot less than a Wolf Power slug

An IMPORTANT Note ...These can only be shot from a Cylinder Bore shotgun,  NOT A RIFLED BARREL SHOTGUN.

+1! and ask your wife first if you can ruin one of her spoons! I also second the suggestion of using a pea-sized hunk of bullet lube for your flux.

... and get yourself a good pair of leather work gloves to wear whenever your furnace is on.

I have used yellow pine sawdust as flux, works great.  Fatwood also works well.

Or melt the shot down and make 400 more slugs which would probably sell for at least 30 cents each for a total of $120
