| I am new to reloading. Any suggestions on what bullets for my .308 AR and who has the best prices? I will be using it for 200-300 yard paper targets with Lithuanian brass and Winchester primers/powder. |

If you're looking for nice groups..........168 gr. BTHP from Sierra or Hornady are a good start. Check the local store or mail order through the regular sources. Aloha, Mark PS..........IF you're just looking to "shoot." Bulk bullets from the major guys are fine. Widener's, Pat's, Bartlett, or where ever. |
Sir, I just finished reading an article in Precision Shooting about the BC of those bullets, except they included the Sierra 155gr Palma instead of the 175. All of these bullets have been very popular with match target shooters for many years with good reason. For distances less than 600yd the 168gr Sierra MK has always been popular among HP shooters, myself included. I haven't looked recently but I believe it becomes transonic somewhere just short of 600yd fired from an M14. HTH, 7zero1. |
Not a chance..... Leaving the muzzle at around 2600 fps the SMK 168 is not going to hit the trans-sonic range till just short of 1k yards. It's a good bullet out to 600 yards, but one of the others previously mentioned are a better choice if the wind is doing anything at all. Great article on reloading for .308: www.6mmbr.com/308Win.html |
The 'new' rational for 155s is that you can launch them in the 2950 fps range. The new ones with high BCs remain supersonic out towards 1300 yards As of right now, when unrestricted (i.e. not International Palma), the 175 SMK is still "king of the hill", but there are several high BC 155s that are giving it a run for the money. Others are experimenting with 190s to see if the high BC makes up for the lower MV. There is not a lot of practical difference* in the lot, with various guns likeing one of the other and owners making the final choices. (*) Actual group-size on 600, 800, 1000 yard target The 168 SMK is a fine bullet and may actually shoot better (i.e. smallre groups) than the 175 SMK at ranges inside of 600 yards. The from there on out, the 175 is the decidely superior bullet. The 168 at 2650 fps goes Mach at 950 yards while the 175 at 2650 fps goes Mach at 1100, but a 155 Scenar at 2950 goes Mach at 1300 yards. A 190 SMK at 2950 goes Mach at 1350 and a 200 SMK at 2900 fps goes Mach at 1425 (according to JBM ballistics). |
Wow!! That's a great site. Lots of good info. |
