| Im looking into loading up some 55gr 223 with Varget powder. The Hogdon's site suggests a starting load of 25.5 grains of powder and a compressed max load of 27.5 grains of powder. I was wondering if anyone had the info from a couple other books? Thanks. |
From Hodgdons website I use 27.2 for 36 gr bullets but no more powder will fit . | I'm using 24.5 gr.of Varget behind Hornady 55 gr. FMJ/BT's and have had excellent results. My Hornady manual has a range of 22.8 gr. to 26.4 gr. for that specific bullet (with a C.O.L. of 2.200"). I started at 22.0 gr and worked up to 26.0 gr. in 0.5 gr. increments when searching for my pet load, and the 24.5 gr. seemed to be the best for function and accuracy out to 300 yards. For what it's worth...... |
Varget is on the slow end of the range for this bullet weight. That's why it fills the case and produces those pressures. Ought to shoot good with a good bullet. |
