I just want to share my thoughts on squirrel hunting with the GSG522 rifle.. First of all this rifle was purchased as a novelty and didn't cross my mind that it could be used as a hunting rifle..    So now I have to share my 2 cents on the rifle.  The rifle is really light it really made walking around the SE MN valley areas easy.   It's accurate to take 40 yard shots without a rifle scope.  Only one problem I found with the sights and that is the rear sight needs color to indicate where to place the front post.. I found at darker times in the mornings it was almost impossible to get a clear sight picture from the rear sight to the front post and to the target.  The rear sight is black and gets blurry when your trying to aim.  But it's more then likely just me..  The ammo I used was CCI velocitors and haven't had a single issue.   Also used was Remington SubSonic ammunition.  I was expecting the rifle not to cycle with subsonic ammo but it didn't seem to mind.   The magazines are another issue in the woods,  first off all I don't need 25 round mags to hunt anything with unless it's a wasp nest.  The mags are to long and liked to snag up on everything.  The faux suppressor thing is also like a musical instrument when it hits or brushes up against anything in the woods.   There was only one problem I had with the rifle and I already figured that it would not extract a cold round from the chamber after the rifle was shot a few times in temps below 9 degrees.   I have seen this issue with other 22lr rifles.  If you fire the gun and the round is hot it extracts out of the chamber fine.  I only encountered this problem as I was leaving the woods and went to clear the rifle the round was frozen in the chamber..   What else can but I had fun the rifle did more then I expected.

Get the 10 round "PK" magazine from the GSG-5PK. It's ideal for shooting from a rest and would work great for this purpose too.

Yeah I think that would eliminate a lot of the snagging up..   Thanks for that info.

I think there are many better options for hunting rimfires. The GSG-5 is very capable of being a hunting gun though so if it is an option you prefer then use it mine has shot many coons and many other varmints that are always in the way. I currently use a BSA red dot on mine.
