So I bought ProMags for my GSG-5, just like so many other value oriented shooters.  I figured that I could get past any of the minor issues that might come up.  And hey, problems aren't gonna happen to *me* right?

Ok, so I've had a couple of issues.

-Bolt hold open not always working  (I could work the bolt "dry" and it would fully close on an empty mag part of the time )
-Bolt going into partial battery with a 1/2 fed round

Not the mags fault right?  Probably just that "cheap" gun right?  Eh, not so much I think now.

Just today I received factory ATI / GSG mag springs to use as replacements for my ProMag springs.  I compared them when I had them apart - big differences.  Wire is thicker on GSG springs, whole spring is longer.  This leads to waaaay more spring pressure on the follower during feeding.  It's easy to feel in the mag action too.

Anyway, tried them in the '5' - bolt held open on all mags with freakin authority.  Not the little bolt pull-back-vibrate-it-a-bit and I'm sure if this was a real recoil it would have locked open sorta thing either.  I mean, normal cocking speed and *locked" open on a empty mag.  It's the mag spring.

This leads me to believe that the ProMags are undersprung for the job as a whole, likely leading to other performance problems.  I'll know more about that part the next time I go to the range.

Every mag they make  has weak cheap springs.

Yeah, I know that's true.

However, sometimes people need to be reminded that when they're having problems like those, not to complain about it one bit if they're feeding their GSG with a weakly sprung ProMag.  That's the lesson here really.

Why is it stupid to point out that some level of the problems many people have had (myself included) might be made somewhat better by simply replacing the mag spring?  Or using factory mags?

There's nothing special about my GSG-5.  I'm sure it's just like many others out there.  It's mechanical behavior improved when I replaced the mag springs.  Simple.  I wanted to remind others who might be in the same situation, and I'd never seen a post from anyone else saying one thing about using the factory springs in ProMags - and what the results were.

What spring did you replace them with, and where can I get them?

Call up ATI and get GSG springs. They are $3 each. I just replaced mine and the GSG springs are much stiffer and longer than the promag springs.

So we can get an $18 ProMag and $3 spring and basically own a $30 GSG-5 mag for $21?

I'm in!
