[ARCHIVED THREAD] - GSG-5 SBR process??? (Page 1 of 2)

Ok, I have a GSG5 on order and was wondering what would be involved with shortening the barrel ( I assume to 8") and adding a 3 lug adapter for looks only.
I want the shorter barrel length without the fake suppresser. I don't want to add a real suppresser, I just want it to look more like a real MP5. Do I have to send the barrel out to be shortened, re-crowned and threaded. Or just cut and re-crowned. I'm confused as to where the adapter attatches. does it attatch like the fake can does, or does it attatch to the barrel. Would this mean applying for a SBR tax stamp then. |
|
First let me say that you can't do any of that without the ATF $200.00 tax stamp in hand. If you want the look of a real MP5 and you are willing to jump through the hoops to get the tax stamp, I think that you would be better off buying the GSG5P (full size pistol) and adding a stock and a screw-on three lug adapter. This would be a much easier and less expensive option.
Just to let you know this won't happen in a hurry. After sending in your Form 1 along with your $200.00 it will likely take three to four months (or longer) to recieve the tax stamp back from ATF. |
|
There are places out there that will cut/recrown your barrel or you can order a direct drop-in replacement. I would opt for the latter so you don't have to worry about shotty gunsmithing.
Check out this out: http://www.ar15.com/forums/topic.html?b=2&f=246&t=164022 Any rifle (weapon) with folding, collapsible, or any other stock-type you can fathom WITH a barrel length of less than 16" is a SBR. $200 tax required. It's steep, but dude, it's worth it. The whole idea of the GSG is an MP5 look alike, the carbine does not look like a MP5 in my opinion. |

If you already have a carbine, don't send your barrel out to be redone for a hefty sum––just call Ray at ATI and order a 5P barrel for around 40 bucks shipped . . . . it will drop right in to the carbine and you'll be ready to rock with the suppressor adapter of your choice––all for much less than you'd pay to have the carbine barrel shortened and recrowned. +1 on having the stamp before you buy your parts! |

That is excellent news, I wasn't aware of buying a pistol barrel from ATI. That would save me $110 over the Gemtech barrel. So the supppessor adapter screws into the rifle, not the barrel? My next question would be does the $200 stamp need to be renewed yearly, or is it a one time fee? Thanks |

Thanks Yeah, I don't see the point in buying a Gemtech barrel or having a carbine barrel machined when the P barrel is available, cheap, and easily replaced. The suppressor adapter for the 5P (or carbine with P barrel) screw into the sight base––this may cause some folks to worry about alignment when using a can, but I've never had any issues. The $200 is a one time tax to you, but any subsequent owners of the weapon (if you were to sell it) would transfer it on a Form 4 with their own $200 tax. |

This is turning into an expensive .22 I have also heard that the rifle will be required to be engraved with my name, any truth to this? Yes, it would, along with your city and state. There are great instructions here and here I opted not to send mine off to any fancy engraver––I went down the street to the local trophy shop and got it done for $10 while I watched. good luck! |

Ok I want to be sure I have everything I need for my SBR,
1) I downloaded copies of Form 1 5320.1, which I will make two copies containing both sides of Form 1. One question on Form 1. What would the overall length be with the Pistol Barrel installed on a GSG5 carbine. Original length of 33.5". The pistol barrel is 9", the carbine barrel is 16". Do I subtract 7" of reduced barrel length off of the original overall length giving me a new OAL of 26.5" for question 4f? 2) I downloaded two copies of Form 5330.20. 3) I need two sets of fingerprints. Do I need to bring my own FD-258 fingerprint forms with me to the PD, or is that a standard form all PD's use? 4) I need two recent 2" x 2" color photos of myself. Not sure easiest way to get this done. Any ideas would be appreciated. 5) Enclose check for $200 6) Order GSG5P barrel from ATI, and 3 lug adapter from MYGSG..com or Swarfworks. Thanks |

Thanks quest. # 1......yes quest. # 1 1/2........assumably yes??? I'm not sure how critical the overall length has to be....as long as your within 1/4 to 1/2 inch????......SOMEONE ELSE PIPE IN HERE????........... my 5p is 27 1/8 O.A. with stock flash hider and the collapsable fully extended....I have 27 1/2 on my stamp cause I too had to guess.... quest. # 2.....is that the certificate of compliance??.......if it is your golden....if not you need one....... quest. # 3.......My local Sherriff had cards when I went to get my prints......$35 (Washoe County Sherriff, Reno NV) quest. # 4........Go to Kinko's, get passport photos......$ 5 ish quest. # 5......yes, make sure its made out right..... quest. # 6.......buy the 3 lug......not sure if I'd buy the barrel until you have your stamp????? |
|
Regarding #2 - the cert of compliance; I've seen references in some places thast you need to send two copies (I think the thread in the class 3 forum shows this). I have seen other references online saying you only need to send one copy of it.
Anyone know for sure? I know the safe answer is send two copies, but I just wanted to know since I saw the discrepency... |

I did the safe.........sent 2 copies............I also sent a note saying im not sure if you (batfe) need two copies, discard one if you dont............I got a post-it back, saying the certificate of compliance is required with anything that requires finger print cards....she never said anything about how many copies???? |
|
Some say you do and some say you don't need two copies of the Cert of Comp. I have always sent two copies of EVERYTHING since it only takes a hot second to run another copy on your printer. I have never had a Form1 get kicked back so I don't plan on changing my system now. My shortest approval mailbox to mailbox was 21 days and the longest 64 days so I guess I am soing something wright. I had a Form1 clear back in April of this year in 40 some od days so NFA doesn't seem to be that slow.

I have been searching for hours for a post I seen just yesterday, someone had listed who to put in the manufacture lines on the form 1. I am assuming that the German Sport Guns should be listed as the original manufacture and ATI under additional Information. This seems to make sense but you know how it is dealing with the ABc people. If some one has an idea please let me know, I can always ask my boss at my part time job since he is an SOT dealer, but was hoping to get them in the mail first thing.
I guess the only thing you can rush when it comes to NFA stuff is just mailing it! |

Hey everyone, I need some clarification from all of you who have SBR tax status.
I currently have a GSG-5 on layaway, but I want to make it an SBR. Here are two possible scenarios and I would like to know how much it will cost because I'm reading confusing answers from other people about SBR vs. AOW etc. 1. If I buy a GSG-5 and then apply for a SBR tax (ATF FORM 1) and are granted it, and I order a short barrel and install it, will I still be able to have my folding/telescoping stock attached, (AND) A VERTICAL GRIP on the forearm? Question is will this only cost $200 for the stamp, or $200 for SBR and another $200 for adding a vertical grip???? 2. If I buy a GSG5P and then apply for a SBR tax, and are granted, and I add a folding/telescoping stock, and a vertical forearm grip, will it only be $200 for the tax, or $200 for adding the stock, and another $200 for adding the forearm???? I think you know where I'm going with this, if not, I don't want to pay $400 dollars to the ATF for adding a vertical grip to a gun i make into an SBR. I just want clarification on this because I see some people post picts of their modified GSG's like the GSG5PW where the person added a folding stock, and has a vert. foregrip but never mentioned how much the tax stamp cost, just only that his approval came in and showed off his pics. Your help with clearing this up for me is greatly appreciated. P.S. I'm in Mississippi does anyone know if there are any bans on SBR ownership in this state? |

Carbine = $200 for SBR stamp.....buy the short barrel after you get the stamp......different stocks and vert grip and accessories are good to go before stamp (carbine only!)......just keep the long (16") barrel until you get the stamp. 5p or 5pk = $200 for SBR stamp.........NO! stock or vert grip until you get the stamp (stock and vert foregrip are not an extra $200 AFTER you get the stamp).........most other accessories (rails, optics, lights, lasers) OK before stamp AOW $200 +$5 to transfer.........unless you want a pistol with a vert foregrip only! .....(no stock ever! unless you pay $200 more to re-SBR it) SBR it.....that way you can pretty much do what you want............$200 one time + whatever the sherrif charges for finger print cards to start the process......... |
|
dirtbike, thanks for the clarification.
I decided I'm buying the GSG5PK and going to leave it OEM until I get my tax stamp approval returned, and then I'm going to put a folding stock and a vertical hand grip on it. I have no intention of having just the hand grip on it, or adding a silencer. |
|
dirtbike: there is one small flaw in your formula. AOW is not $200 +$5 transfer. It is a straight $200 tax if YOU are making it into an AOW by adding the vert grip on a Form1 (vert grip only, no stock). If you have a Class2/SOT put the vert grip on it for you, then transfer it to you, then you only pay a $5 transfer tax on a Form4. Not both, and the Class2/SOT "does not" have to pay a makers tax. That is what the SOT pays a butload of money for every year.
