I always thought the cocking lever on the MP5 would lock back when the last round was fired from the gun, and slapped down to close the slide with the new round being chambered.  Now my understanding is that you have pull back the cocking level (while the bolt is locked back) to get the the slide to fully close and load the new round.

I guess that's something I always assumed for many guns.  Since you have to pull the cocking level back again to reload the next round from the ammo.. what was the advantage?  Wouldn't it have been better if the Germans added a button to cause the slide to move forward after loading the new round.  It just seems like it would be faster and more efficient.

MP5s don't actually have a bolt hold open for the last shot

GSG most likely added the last round bolt hold open as rimfires tend to not like dry firing and without a hold open you would drop the hammer on an empty chamber regularly when you ran out of ammo just like happens on a real 9mm MP5.  HK did add a last round hold open to the .40 and 10mm MP5's but it was mainly due to an FBI request.  Since the GSG5 is modeled after the 9mm version, I see no problem with having to work the cocking handle to release the bolt.

That's interesting..  Can't believe for all this time I had thought it held it open.

Nope, they (HK MP5, HK91, etc) never have, its one of the reasons why I dumped my CETME.

I love the bolt hold open on my GSG though!
