What I used to carry

Oh damn! Buck Nighthawk! Forgot I had one of those back in the day. Bought it as a quick replacement for the Kabar I'd had for years and sadly lost somewhere at Pendleton. Really liked that Buck. Foolishly gave it to a younger guy when I upgraded to something else.

(Japanese) and knew how to use em! I like the Confederate "Bowies" that were in reality short swords, blacksmith made. If I was carrying a single shot rifle, you bet your sweet ass I would have a sword secondary! It is so classy. Made for knife fighting, and knife fighting was still taught to some degree to combat soldiers. with the idea of sappers in the wire, close combat etc I kinda want something like this too View Quote |

From a pure combat knife - as in knife fighting - I choose the Emerson Karambit (sp). This is a fighting knife and not designed to be used as a multi tool. My EDC is a standard Emerson CQB folder. The Karambit needs to be practiced with very regularly. If you don’t train with it, don’t carry it.

Anybody have experience with the Spartan Blades Ares? Got all my other knife avenues covered, but find myself having a high end fighting knife itch right now. The Ares is the one I'm looking at the hardest, with the Microtech SOCOM Alpha as a runner up.

Quoted: Given how overloaded the current soldier is, I think a design priority for a modern combat knife should be reduced weight while still being 'effective.' Spyderco Street Bowie would be attractive due to the lightweight - 3.8oz - while still having a 5" blade. A Kabar is 11.2oz, Cold Steel SRK 8.2oz, Glock knife 7.3oz... https://sadefensejournal.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/03/spyderco_feature2-630x320.jpg View Quote That was my thinking as well. I used to collect WW2 militaria, including knives, and I noticed that many actual combat knives were very, very light, lively in the hand and very intuitive to use, unlike the heavy, clunky and huge “combat” knives one sees advertised in various places. Even the old Camillus Mark 2 knives were light as a feather compared to modern Ka-Bars. The German nähkampfmesser, or “close combat knife” is a prime example of light weight, good design and ease of use. I like to think of the Spyderco Street Bowie as a modern day version of that excellent design. My son sent me one while I was in Afghanistan, and aside from the fact that I cherish it because it was a gift from him, it is an excellent little knife for daily use. It conceals very well, and I even wear it while running, clipped inside the waistband of my shorts. It’s light enough you’ll forget it’s there, but it’s a good sized blade for anything you might call upon a fighting knife to do. |

I like a forward sweep of the hand to pop a retention strap. |

Oh and probably thanks to Bill Bagwell's writing in the 80s extolling the virtues of Bowie knives etc. |
