I've been kicking around the idea of an OTF for probably the better part of a decade. Now that they are legal to own and carry where I live, and even legal to carry here on campus where I work (as long as it's under 5" blade and not double sided) i'm thinking about getting one. I know a bunch about normal folders, typical EDC are usually bench made or a kershaw launch auto, but never owned an OTF.
what do you think for a good first one? something quality that will last, but not looking to pay more than 150-200 unless i really need to. |

The standard double action otf is pretty much the Ultratech. They come in all sorts of varieties, but might be over your limit. You may get lucky finding a used one for less.
I don't currently have any benchmade otf blades but they will probably be recommended a bunch too. The prices will be close to the same, but they don't seem of equal quality to me. Another option is a single action otf. Pros: Generally less expensive Less likely to jam up with pocket lint and dirt Cons: Less cool factor 2 handed closing |

I don't think the infidel is bad or poorly made or anything. I have a bunch of benchmades and like them. I just think when compared to the ultratech the extra cost of the infidel isn't worth it.
For the microtech I like the side button placement better. There are generally better and more steel options. The blade deploys very fast and has little play when open. I always thought the action on the infidel was slower and has more play, could just be my perception. I know ultratechs can be had for around $230. Just a quick search for the infidel and I'm seeing $350 for the mini and $400 for the full size. I assume there are discounts to be found but that's a big difference. |

Ok so I snagged the Microtech UTX for $100! all original box, papers, etc. It's small, but the action is really nice. I wanted to see if I would get into autos, and I think I like it. I didn't spend too much on it, so I'm going to actually carry it and put it to the test. I think it may work for my random EDC needs, since I work in an office. If I need a scissors I have one, if I need to cut an apple I have a kitchen. This will be a great tactical box opener, and I guess last ditch SD.
It does make me really consider a mid size blade though... |

You should consider getting a Lightening OTF for your first. They are around $30.00, cheap but fairly sharp. This will give you some experience with OTF to see if you like them. If so, then you can spend big money on a more quality knife. |

Lightning here, too. You get the experience with a decent quality piece that won't fall apart. They have a good workmanlike execution and heavy EDC users report good long term service.
If it breaks - rarely reported - it's $35. You buy another. If you dive into a $400 OTF and it breaks, you discover that mailing it to the factory for service is problematic at best, and downright banned - by them - at worse. Some of the high end names mentioned in the thread will NOT service your knife unless you are bona fide LEO/MIL and even then it can be a hassle. There are also the more traditional side opening autos on the market, and surprisingly some models are a huge price/benefits bargain which are prized by their owners. One example that still ships from the country of origin is a button lock with billet bolster/liners, 440C flat ground blade, G10 grips, and an original style reminiscent of a traditional Italian folder made modern. $18 bucks. Shipped. It is not all about fakes or copies out there, and you can get lots of value for the money. The American switchblade market is a protected hothouse environment and you can get a good working blade for far less than the auto snobs will talk about. |

thanks for the head's up. I ended up getting that little micro tech, and carried it a bunch. I liked it but it was too small for EDC. I happened to luck into an HK OTF Turmoil as part of a trade deal, and that's currently in my pocket. I got out of the little guy exactly what I had into it, but I'm really liking this OTF stuff.
Only problem I've found is that my wife keeps "borrowing" it and I'm not sure I'll get it back... |
