I am thinking of picking up my first Mora knife.
The go to seems to be the companion. Then i found the companion heavy duty.

So i come to the knife experts here on AR15.com.

Which would you recommend between  these two as a general purpose EDC knive.
Keep in mind, i work for my college in the "mechatronic" department as a tech most
days. So i am cutting and scoring various things alot.

On a side note, i saw Mora has newer knife the pathfinder, while way to expensive
at the moment for me, i see they have the 748 MG that looks similar. Does anyone
have any experience with this knife? I really cant find any reviews on it. This would
just be a fun knife or a knife to have when going into the woods.

Thanks

Don't have any opinion on your model, but a year back, I bought their HD in carbon steel and their FireSteel in stainless steel jobbie and they're nice knives for not a lot of money.

I haven't felt the need to go beyond those and I've bought both a Helle Dokka folder and a EnZo Birk 75 folder, just to get into the Scandi grind realm, but those are more money than the Moras.

The companion HD is great it has a thicker blade than the standard but is still very sharp and it is not overly thick. You probably already know that it is Carbon steel and will rust easily if not cared for.

The Pro series of knives is great also, the Pro Robust has a better sheath than the companion and still has the thick carbon steel blade but slightly shorter than the HD.   The Pro S is pretty close with the same handle and sheath but with a stainless blade This is my go to Mora for most things.

Another great value Swedish knife is the Hultafors line, the Plumbers knife is great for general utility work and has  a file built into the side of the stainless blade.

If you have not used a Scandi grind knife before you should know that the blades are so sharp with such a thin edge that they can chip easily if you try cutting things like wires or bone or anything very hard. For a hard use value knife the Hultafors GK Heavy Duty is awesome. It has a thick carbon steel blade that I would say is better quality than the Mora Carbon steel. It does not have a true Scandi grind, it has a significant secondary bevel much like most American knives. This makes for a much stronger edge that takes abuse better.

Hultafors GK on top
Mora Robust, Same as Companion HD but different color handle and sheath.
Mora 510 bottom.

If you're cutting and scoring a lot then maybe a box cutter/utility knife would be better. Wear the bkade out and change it vs sharpening it all the time. When I worked construction I used a utility knife because there was just no reason to beat up good knives on dumb shit day in and day out. If you want a Mora get one have fun with it.

I will be mostly cutting cardboard paper and rope. There are other things, but those are the three
i pretty much cut everyday. For the rare instance we have to cut wire we generally have snips. But
wire is actually sent to the warehouse to be processed. The most cutting we would do is if the cable
was classified as junk and we had to cut the outer insulation to sort the inner wire.

But there is a reason i asked about the mora. The box cutter/utility knife would probably be the best bet,
except i still have to go to my classes, and you cant have a box cutter/utility knife in class. You can have
a multi-tool or a regular knife as long as the knife is not exposed. It can show a little, but only if it is
mounted for carry and you don't mess with it.

this. I gave up on ruining good blades at the lab and as soon as I get to work in the mornings, I put a red safety blade in my rear pocket or my carpenter pants pocket. Utility Knives are the bastard step children of blades but actually far more useful than most pocket knives.

It doesn't make any sense that you can't have a utility knife but you can carry a 4"ish field blade.

I have both the regular Companion and the Heavy Duty. I much prefer the Heavy Duty. Those are all I buy now (of Moras).

What reasons do you like the heavy duty over the regular companion?
While i have been leaning towards the heavy duty myself, i just wanted to know since you have both.

I have both as well and chose the HD, the regular companion has a pretty thin blade, like a kitchen knife it flexes a lot while doing lightweight tasks. The HD has a blade that is about normal thickness compared to a lot of outdoor utility knives, It is not thicker than most knives, just thicker than most Mora's.

So for me the Regular companion makes a great fishing knife or kitchen knife while the HD makes a great all around utility knife and outdoor knife.
