Knife dealers only selling automatic knives to law enforcement or military. Where does this law come from (Fed. or State). and does a CCDW permit by non-military or law enforcment play into this?

Each state has different laws.

Check your state laws, then find a local dealer.

BladeHQ will ship anywhere, you just have to know your state laws

I was looking for an auto knife for awhile, being law enforcement I wasn't worried about carrying it too much. But the problem is they are too much money for what you get. For the same money you can get an assisted opening flipper knife, which is just as fast if not faster, most likely will have better steel, and be legal everywhere. I am a fan of hard use knives, I want to know I can depend on it when SHTF, so I bought a Zero Tolerance 0300 recently, you would not believe the quality built into this knife, it's built like a freaking tank. And its S30V steel too, one of my favorites.

Buy an Emerson with the "Wave" feature.  When deployed from a pocket it's no contest that the Emerson will have the blade out faster than any automatic.  Plus they are LEGAL everywhere with the possible exception of blade length.  They are not classified automatics.

Depends on state and/or federal laws.

If your LE or Active Military I can tell you that Pro Tech and Benchmade do offer discounts.

I only have one and its a protech, got it as a deployment momento I still use it when I'm in uniform but other than that it sits in my drawer. I don't want to run afoul of state laws... So it pretty much is a collectors piece for me unless virginia changes switchblade laws or I move.

IIRC KY does allow anyone to have and carry a auto knife, but it can not be concealed. So it's really up to what the state considers concealed. Pocket clip? Must be in a pouch on belt? Etc. I'm not a lawyer but I would look up KY knife laws.

BTW Emersons are a good option, no mechanism just the wave hook on the spine of the blade.

State, but more specifically city/township laws vary from place to place. Be very careful with this.

Benchmade lists them as being restricted by the fed's however I have not been able to find the law.  I have found several, I would estimate in teh hundreds of city and county ordinances that prohibit them.  In Kalifornia, assisted open knives by letter of the law were illegal.  A court ruling said that if it has a thumb stud it is not considered illegal.  For the money, I would buy an assisted open or an emerson.  Autos are cool in looks and fucntion but not needed and way over priced.
