So my EDC is a folder..Kershaw Leek to be exact. I'm considering switching over to a fixed blade, maybe something like the Becker bk11 or something of the same caliber. I've weighed the pros and cons of both. Folder is easier to carry, and if need be I can unclip it from my pocket and drop it down into my pocket and no one knows. But they aren't quite as strong as a fixed blade and I'm on somewhat of a budget so something like a ZT folder is out of the question. I'm on the road a lot (company truck) so I feel slightly under-knifed with just a small folder, and firearms aren't allowed. Or would something along the lines of the CRKT M21 be a more "best of both worlds" alternative, if such a thing exists?

So I guess the question is this...is there anything I've overlooked regarding a folder vs. fixed? What are some other alternatives to something like the BK11? And is there any reason a folder won't do 99% of what I'd probably use the fixed blade for?

A folder is nice for daily cutting tasks.
A nice fixed blade is usually better for defense.

My fixed blade is a TDI-Kabar tanto point, worn like a pistol, the draw is instinctive.

I did the same, went from a folder to a fix blade.  I choose the ESEE Izula.
I like the shorter blade length for EDC and the no questions ask warranty.

I went from a folder to a fixed blade and then right back to a folder. I tried both an Izula and a Bark River mini canadian. I wanted to like it, but couldn't. Pocket sheaths are slow and bulky if you wear fitted clothes, and belt sheaths for small knives put the knife too high. At work, wearing armor made it hard to draw. They also took two hands to put away, while everything can be done with one hand without looking while using a folder. In social situations, people were less likely to to bat an eye at a push button auto than my Izula, especially if it was visible on the belt.

The gross blade/lock strength on many newer folders is impressive. You aren't going to break one unless your knife tasks would be better handled with a chisel or bar.
