Ok, I realize this is backwards, but hear me out.  A friend of mine has created a tool out of a spyderco knife that I would like to duplicate.

First the tool:

The purpose of this tool is threefold.  #1 the pocket clip makes it easily carried in an accessible fashion.
#2 in the event of a case head separation, the end is small enough and the hook is sharp enough to grab the brass left in the chamber and pull it out.
#3 in the event of a double feed, the scalloped end is shaped just right to be able to grab the rim of the round and allow the shooter to pound it out.

It seems a knife with a blade shaped like this might make the conversion easiest, but I hate spending $80 on a knife that I am immediately going to bugger up.

I tried grinding up a cheap Chinese copy today, and the end result sucked.  The handle and belt clip were what you would expect from a $5 knife, and the blade doesn't seem like it would withstand clearing a double feed. The other problem is both the generic and the spyderco are lock back rather than a liner lock, so putting it back in the pocket one handed is much more sporting than I would prefer.

So, since I am not a knife expert, educate me on what might be a suitable donor knife for this project.  I guess my requirements are, a metal pocket clip, a liner lock, a stud or hole to open it with [no Kershaw style fingertip open] and a fairly sturdy blade that is thick to as close to the end of the point as possible. I suspect at least a 3-1/2" blade will give me enough meat to work with once I am grinding.  If that can be had on the cheap, so much the better.  I will buy a grind a spyderco if I have to, but if there is a better choice for donor, I would like to know.

yeah I would also have a hard time doing that to such a nice knife. what about getting a kershaw or buck or something not shitty but not spyderco $

or look for a used damaged one on ebay since you are going to destroy the blade. Might even call spyderco and see if they have any knifes they have warranted that they would sell you cheap.

Although my experience dealing with spyderco left me feeling like I was talking to hk....

The cheapest Spyderco you will find to meet your specs is probably a Tenacious (3.4" blade).  $35 shipped at Amazon.  If you need more blade length, a Resilience has a 4.25" blade length and is $43 shipped at Amazon.

In a real sense, you can use any knife with enough blade length.  An old beater from that junk drawer should work - I don't think you need to buy a new knife to adapt...

I'll look at those, but a big part of this tool's purpose is to be STURDY, and so far generic knives just aren't.  Trying to clear a .308 double feed is not a job for a wimpy tool.  My Leatherman is sturdy enough, but the one-handed manipulation leaves a bit to be desired.

You might be looking at a $43 experiment!

Let us know how it turns out...

Why not just get a piece of steel from an old saw blade or something and take the blade off the spyderco or whatever, and make the steel match the lock area profile, and do what you want with the rest of the blade.  That way if you don't like it, you can put the blade back on and still have a functional knife.

Could you modify a marlin spike rather than a blade?  Then you could get a Myerchin or other sailing knife....

I thought of that, but part of the purpose of this is to be able to open, operate and close it one handed, because where I need this is during a 3 gun match, while I am on the clock.  I have used my Leatherman to good effect in this capacity, but it is slow, and sucks one handed.  I am trying to improve on this.

Your friend's tool looks like it was made from an older Spyderco Endura.  New ones run about $60, but you might be able to get a used one for less.  The back lock can be opened and closed one-handed pretty easily with a little practice.  You could also look at a Sogzilla, which is basically a SOG copy of the Endura.  Another thought, you could add a wave to the blade for faster opening, or look for an Endura with the factory wave feature on it.

My thoughts for source knife anyway, run an ad in the EE...."Wanted AFU Spyderco ......." maybe someone will have a dull or chipped knife in their drawer of shame.

That's a good idea.

The one thing about his tool I would change is the lock mechanism.  I much prefer liner locks, so if I am going to have to procure a knife anyway, I might as well hit ALL of my points..
