Ok, so I'm looking at a new knife for some camping/ hiking.  My son is almost 6 and I'm ready to start teaching him some skills.  So far we did the backyard "camping" and he did really well.  We made it through the night without incident ( I did have the laptop for movies).  This year the first trip is planned for my dad's property where we can be in the woods out of sight of housing.  If that goes well we'll do a hike/ camp at the state forest.

I've got an Izula and I love it.  It will work fine for small tasks.  I don't want to bring a hatchet so I'm looking for a larger knife.  I really can't decide between the ESEE 4 and the 6.  I've got a Mora that will probably come with also since it weighs nothing and it works for Cody!  It looks like the 4 would be big enough for most tasks and will probably attach to my pack or waist better.  I really like the idea of the 6, however, since I feel I can hack at branches and baton better.  I don't have the funds to "get both" but we all know I will have both someday.

I've got two boys so, having something to pass down is a given.

So, 4 or 6?  Thoughts?

I think it was Bill Bagwell that said " you can do everything with a big knife that you can with a small knife, but not the other way around".  I'm sure there are some exceptions, but you already have the small size covered.

Mr. Bagwell hasn't seen the new TSA knife restrictions then has he?

If this was going to be your only knife I would suggest the 4, but since you already have an Izula and a Mora then I would go with the 6.

With those 3 blades you have all your bases covered and should be able to handle all tasks.

unknown, but none of the knives mentioned in this thread would get past the tsa anyway.

I had my eye on the laser strike.  Looks like a nice knife.

I personally have the 4 and the izula. I find it to be a good combo but if I had it to do over I would skip on the 4 and go with the 6 or junglas.  I love my 4 but it is just not up to chopping or big enough for batoning.   Your mileage may vary.

Junglas is a beast...i have an izula 2, 3, 4 and 5...and the 5 is just a tank, very heavy dudty with a nice blade....dont think you could go wrong with a 5, 6 or junglas for your needs

the 5, you can use as a hatchet no problem, blade is extra thick and you have to try and find a way to break it, like clamp the blade in a vise and then whack the handle with a large hammer.

you have small covered, so skip the 4 and go with 5, 6, or Jungles
